Chapter 1

My story starts with a typical Saturday morning on the 3rd May 1939. World War 2 has broken out in March of this year and the government have been evacuating the towns and cities of the mothers and their children. Now it's my turn to be evacuated.

''Alice! Alice get up!'' Ivy, my mother, said shaking my shoulders up and down as I was in bed asleep.

As you might have guessed already I'm Alice, I'm nearly 16, I have long ebony coloured hair which falls just below my shoulders and is in perfect natural curl and I've got deep cerulean, almost silver, coloured eyes.

''What? Leave me alone!'' I answered sleepily to my mother. After dragging my sorry self out of bed and getting dressed, I made sure everything I needed was packed in my small leather suit case. When I got down stairs my mother said to me

"Oh, Alice have you got that necklace I gave as a leaving present?" At that point I heard my mum's voice break with unushed tears and sadness but carried on to say,"You might want something to remind you of us. When you're with your new family ." After she finished speaking she broke down into tears and running out of the room and locking herself into her bedroom. So I followed her out of the room and stood outside her door and said in a soft reassuring voice.

"Mother, I will never forget you. You're my mother and no one can persuade me otherwise I will always love you!" With that we were on our way.

When we arrived at the train station, it was full of people trying to get to the platforms with their children. There were toddlers crying, teenagers hoping and parents worrying. The children have to be registered, and then they board the red iron monster called a steam train. Then I waved goodbye to my mother and father. However I was, blissfully, unaware it would be the last time. Then my mother found where I was on the train. I was leaning out of the window. She wiped away an escaped tear with her embroidered cream silk hanker-chief. She kissed my forehead not knowing of their soon to be fatal future that would befall them...
