It has been three years since Wilbur learned how to drive the time machine, and he would say he's quite the expert. Not only has he mastered the driving mechanics, but also how to sneak out with it. He has every family member's schedule memorized. His mom was easy because she was hardly ever home anyway, since she started touring with her frog band six months ago. The hardest was his father's. The man never slept it seemed, but roughly, around two o'clock in the morning he'll doze off, then resolve to go to bed. This was prime time to sneak out. The garage is far enough secluded that the family can not hear much movement, but just in case, Wilbur had taken a few weeks to make the garage door silent. The good thing about traveling via time machine was that he could come back one minute later, almost as if he never left. He kept a log book for the times he left in order to remember what time to input on his way back.
Why was Wilbur going through such trouble? A girl. The girl. One year ago he visited the heyday of superheroes, and he discovered one up close. It was the vigilante Invisigirl, who had begun doing individual missions apart from her superfamily. When Wilbur found her, he had landed in an alleyway to easily hide the time machine. But she ran in to change out of her suit and become a regular citizen.
~~~~~~~
Wilbur was geeking out. There was a superhero right in front of him! He always loved reading about superheroes, but to see one in the flesh...Then she took off her mask, and he was brought out of his trance. He realized that next coming off was her suit and he turned around right away, covering his eyes. Wilbur was curious, but not that curious. He was still a gentleman. Now stuck with his thoughts, the only image he saw was Invisigirl's unmasked face. She was beautiful. But, she probably would freak out if she knew he saw her. How can he get out of this situation?
There was a bang on the time machine. It startled Wilbur enough to turn around. He saw the girl on the ground clutching her head. She looked up with wide eyes. Wilbur could only assume she ran into the invisible time machine which she couldn't see...because it was invisible. Now he was stuck. He debated making a run for it. The ink-haired girl reached out to the vehicle she did not know was there. She made contact and Wilbur held his breath. The vigilante looked so confused. After pushing his last thought of escape out of his mind, Wilbur decided to turn off the invisible feature. He figured he was in too deep anyway.
The girl recoiled in shock, at the sight of Wilbur and the time machine. She was filled with trepidation and got up to escape, but she started to wobble. Wilbur opened the hatch of the time machine and hopped out, ready to help her if she would accept it.
~~~~~~~
Wilbur approached the time machine in the depths of the night. His father had finally gone to bed. He was so excited to see her today. Wilbur touched his hand to the place on the vehicle where she first inspected it. It had been a year since they had their first encounter. He smiled at the thought.
~~~~~~~
"Who the hell are you?!" She asked and then grimaced in pain from her throbbing head.
"Whoa, whoa. Do you want to attract attention?" She glared at him but heeded his words. He didn't mean to be rude, but he also did not need anyone else to discover either of their secrets. Wilbur also wanted her to trust that he had no intention of telling anybody her secret."I have an ice pack," he offered timidly, "If you want it." Why was he acting so shy? This was not his normally loud, outgoing self.
She hesitantly nodded and Wilbur climbed into the vehicle. When he offered her a hand up she turned away. A little hurt, Wilbur brought the ice pack out to her. She took it with feeble thanks. They stood there awkwardly. Wilbur felt uncomfortable, he hated silence. What should he say though? I've read all about you. No, that's creepy. Plus she probably doesn't know about the comics all about supers.
"Why do you just...have an ice pack handy?" The girl started. Wilbur was surprised.
"Well, it took a while to get used to landing." He smiled sheepishly.
"Landing??"
Wilbur mentally slapped himself. He thought she realized it was a time machine. She probably could not comprehend a flying vehicle. Luckily he was good with words.
"That's what my part of town calls...driving." Good one Wilbur.
"You're so bad at driving, that you need an ice pack ready at all times?" She looked at him suspiciously. "How did you get here in one piece?" She smiled slightly.
Even though he basically told her that he was bad at "driving," he was still offended, because after two years he was a master with a flying vehicle. He decided to retaliate, "what about you? Shouldn't Invisigirl be able to see an Invisible object?"
The girl looked mad. She dropped the ice pack and turned around to leave.
~~~~~~~
Wilbur cringed at that memory. It was their very first fight and it was so unnecessary. He put her time in and ascended from the garage. He warped into the future and muscle memory took over, bringing him to their rendevous spot. His body allowed his mind to continue wondering.
~~~~~~~
"Sorry! That was uncalled for." Wilbur was making all kinds of mistakes today. The vigilante kept walking. To ensure he stopped slipping up, he resolved to tell her the truth. "Listen, a secret for a secret." She turned back to him looking intrigued. "But you can't tell anyone." She gave a curt affirmation. "This is...a time machine and...I am from...75 years in the future."
She laughed at first, but looking at the sincerity in his eyes, she was compelled to believe him. She looked down and considered for a moment.
"My name is Violet, and I'm Invisigirl." He gave her a gentle smile, "Aaaand, I think I have a concussion." She smiled back. He stepped forward and grabbed the ice pack. He offered it out to her, and she took it. "Thanks...um," Violet cut off.
"Wilbur," He gave her the Robinson smile.
Violet smiled back with a blossom of pink on her face. "Wilbur," she repeated.
"Would you like me to drive you home?"
She smiled. "Don't you mean 'land' me home?" She giggled. He beamed, as his cheeks grew red. "But, sure." His eyes snapped to hers. He did not expect her to agree. He climbed into the time machine, and this time when he offered his hand she took it. She sat in the seat behind him and let out a sigh. She placed the ice pack on her head and gave him directions.
~~~~~~
As Wilbur waited for her to arrive he tried to think of the first time Violet gave him that queasiness in his stomach that he gets every time he sees her now.
~~~~~~~
When they arrived at her house, Wilbur turned the time machine invisible. Violet was dozing and her hand with the ice pack was falling. He placed his hand on hers keeping it there. Her purple eyes fluttered open and she looked gorgeous. Wilbur's heart was thumping wildly and he started to feel sick. Before she could notice he backed up and gestured to her house, "we're here."
Violet breathed out a laugh as she got up. "Nice to meet you, Wilbur," she said sticking her hand out. They shook hands and just like that, she was gone.
Even though no one would hear him Wilbur replied, "nice to meet you too." He started the engine, closed the glass cover, and shifted the gear. He entered the time he wrote when he departed, indicating one minute after he left his time.
The garage door opened and Wilbur carefully landed. The hand she shook felt strange and he looked at it. He sighed and quietly shut everything off. One thing on her seat caught his eye. It was a note.
I will be in the forest down the street from my house tomorrow around 3 pm.
Wilbur beamed, as he hurried silently back to his room, hardly ever taking his eyes off the note.
~~~~~~~
"What are you smiling at?" Violet asked.
"Nothing," Wilbur grinned, never taking his eyes off her.
