The gods of the omniverse were in uproar. Their issue? Why humanity was still alive. They just couldn't understand it. Humans were a weak, useless species that couldn't even expand beyond their home planet. They would have surely ran out of sustinence by now.
But no. Humanity had to be a constant annoying ache in the side of existence, and the gods had decided enough was enough.
They held a vote to decide whether to leave them alone, or wipe them out once and for all. The vote wasn't quite unanimous. All but one being voted to end humanity. One single deity voted to give them a chance. The leader of the gods, Zeus, stood on the podium.
"What is your reason for voting against the decision to finish the humans, Argus?" The Protector of Edenia readied himself and stood up to address the gathered gods.
"In my humble opinion, I think it a tad unfair to simply wipe humanity from reality all of a sudden, not giving them the chance to defend themselves. Don't you all think it would be more... just... to let them try and save themselves?"
The deities around the area murmured to each other, some nodding and seemingly agreeing, but others shaking their head and looking disgustedly at Argus.
"This is a bold opinion, Argus" said Zeus, raising his hands for silence. "How do you suggest we give humanity the opportunity to justify their lives?" Argus paused for a moment, then addressed the audience again.
"Ragnarok".
Almost immediately, the atmosphere in the area changed from disgruntlement, to excitement. Every god had one thing in common; they loved watching fights and violence. Argus, however, knew that violence and victory in combat would be the only way to have the gods agree to let humanity survive.
"We haven't held a Ragnarok in millenia" Zeus muttered into Argus's ear, so that no one else heard. "Are you certain that is how you will defend the humans?". Argus nodded to the master of the gods, and Zeus stood up again. "Very well. Ragnarok it shall be. Argus, you are granted one human week to find your thirteen champions for this bout. The rest of the gods will select our own fighters. The side to claim victory seven times or more shall have their wish granted".
"Hang on!" called someone in the audience. "Do the champions have to kill each other, or is it based on who yields first?"Everyone gathered started repeating this question, and Zeus leaned down to Argus to get the answer. Once he had it, he stood up yet again.
"In each fight, the loser will be who surrenders first. Blood may be spilt, but there will be no murder". The gods murmured, apparently in disappointment. Zeus turned back to Argus. "You may go now, Argus, and find your champions. Ragnarok will take place in one week. Good luck to you!".
Argus left the room, followed by cheering for a new Ragnarok. He was feeling worried; what humans could he pick that could challenge whatever the gods chose? He knew that Zeus would know who he would pick, and thus choose champions based of his selections. He concluded that he should find those pure and brave at heart, who wouldn't have an issue fighting anyone, but would relent before killing their opponent. Maybe the odd killer here or there, but not all of them.
Argus sighed, and left to begin scouring through reality for his champions.
