Jacob opened his eyes to bright white light and blinked, his world slowly coming into focus. At first, he could only move his eyes, and then he was able to turn his head this way and that. Where am I? Jacob spotted a blurry figure in the bed next to him, stirring as if they'd only just woken up. He tried to speak, but his words were caught in his throat. That's when Jacob realized there was a tube down his throat. He was in the hospital! The sounds all came rushing to him at once. The beeping of the machines, the intake and outtake of breath as the machine helped him breathe. His heart started to pound, and he grabbed onto the tube and pulled it out of his own throat, coughing and gagging into the sheets. He felt hands on his shoulders and chest, and voices coming from all around him.

"Jacob," a man called from somewhere beside him. "Jacob, can you hear me?" Jacob nodded and his eyes flicked over to the man who was speaking. The man was dressed in grey scrubs and had a stethoscope hanging around his neck. "Good. Welcome back, kid."
