Amy and Alex

I walked alone through an alley in the pitch dark, following Alex past the bodies that lie still on the wet ground. He carefully checked each neck for pulses and scanned each one over for some movement. When we had been called to help, it was just one man vomiting. Now we had several corpses with various cases of wounds and illness. One woman leaned against the wall by a dumpster just outside the door to the corner store.

"Ma'am? It's okay, we are medics. We just want to help. Can you tell us what is wrong?" asked Alex as we slowly approached. There was a dim light just past the corner, giving off just enough to see her twitch and begin to turn our way. What we saw was horror incarnate.

She was holding a severed forearm and chowing down like she was at the buffet. Blood dripping from her chewing mouth. Her eyes weren't visible but I could feel them. Empty pits of despair stabbing holes into my inner soul. My stomach left my body and my brain abandoned ship.

"Alex, we need to go, I can't get dispatch to respond" my voice sounded desperate. "I don't like this, we got six bodies and a cannibal. She is so pale, almost grey. I didn't sign up for this and I damn sure don't get paid enough." I tugged his arm back.

He kept his eyes on the woman, and pushed me back towards the van, "Go slow, she's on the move. When I say run, then run." he kept his arm stretched in front of me.

A few steps and he hollered, "GO!" we both turned and high tailed it out of there, barely missing the scatter of bodies we had passed moments before. As we ran, I could hear him demanding dispatch to respond. The only sound coming through the walkie was static and groans. Groans of the animal kind. Deep and throaty. Bone chilling.

As soon as we reached the van, I hopped into the driver seat and started her up. Once he was in, I sped off into the empty street and toward the hospital.
