Amanda

A woman sat in the corner of the office, rocking back and forth silently. Amanda approached her, reaching out to comfort her. The news was reporting strange attacks all over and she didn't know what was really going on. The woman began sobbing and mumbling about someone being right about something.

"I cant' believe this right now. He was right. Right about it all. We need to get out of the city. But how? They'd have us sealed in by the time I reach city limits."

"Are you okay? Should I call someone?" Amanda tenderly touched her shoulder. "Do you have a spouse? I can call them and let Aaron know you had to leave early." Amanda was worried about the woman having a panic attack. It was only her third day on the job. Poor girl, pressure was too much on her. Surely Aaron would understand if she had to go early.

"Are you daft? No one is going to care after today. Aaron is probably already dead."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Amanda was taken aback.

"You saw it on the news! The world is dying! The dead aren't staying dead! Anyone in the main city is as good as dead!" the woman started getting louder, "the people you knew and loved," she made a face of disgust, "gone."

"Gone? Dead?" the new finally sank in. Amanda dropped to her knees and panicked. " Josiah... are you........ You're not... can't." Amanda pulled her phone out dialed a number through her tears. The phone just rang. She felt it would ring forever. She hung up at the sound of voicemail. She dialed again. This time he picked up on the second ring.

"Hello?" he sounded sleepy.

"Sorry to wake you baby, but I need you to listen closely. Do not, under any circumstances, go outside. Don't answer he door. I'm coming home to get you. I need you to pack some clothes an food for us both."

"Why?, what's going on?"

"Honestly I don't know. Turn on the news but keep the volume down." Amanda listened as he moved around the apartment, "I love you. I'll be there soon." She ended the call and headed for the door, grabbing her bag and coat as she passed her desk. "Do you want to come with me?" She turned and asked the woman.

"Yes, thank you." she also grabbed her things and followed Amanda. They walked around the back of the building quickly and came upon a faded, green Buick.

"It's unlocked, hop in." They threw their bags in the back seat and buckled up. Amanda sped off towards the city.

"We are going to need weapons. I have a gun in my apartment. It's two blocks away. Just turn left on Willams Way." the woman stated, "By the way, I'm Brenda." she looked over to Amanda, "Might be easier to get to know each other on different circumstances,  but we gotta do with what we have"

"Amanda."

"Is it your husband we are headed to?"

"My son. He's sixteen tomorrow."

"Wow, what a birthday it will be" said Brenda sarcastically.

"Indeed" replied Amanda.
