He shot up straight, heaving breaths. Sweat beaded on his forehead as his heart pounded in his ears. Disoriented, he looked around, panicking when he finally processed that this wasn't his bedroom.
"AGH! WHO'S THAT?!"
He flinched as a scratchy voice replied to his silence. A boy with fluffy russet hair that covered his eyes jerked his head around in fear, looking for the source of the sound.
"How did you know I was here?!"
"Your heartbeat is giving me a headache!"
He grew silent. Heartbeat? "Who are you?"
"I-.. I can't remember," the other boy replied."What's your name?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
The boy shook his head, his fluffy hair waving from side to side.
"There's a nametag on your shirt though. Shouldn't you have read that already?"
The blonde boy grew quiet and he averted his gaze to the sterile white ground. The buzzing of the lights felt like it was becoming louder and louder as the silence became even more awkward.
"I can't." His scratchy voice was quiet and solemn. "Not anymore."
"You.. can't?"The blonde boy lifted up the hair covering his eyes, revealing a bandage stained with dried blood. "They took them."
"They took.. your eyes?" His voice had shrunk into a whisper as fear and dread crept up his spine. "Well.. um.. would you.. like me to read your nametag?"
"Oh. Uh.. sure."
He walked over to the other boy's bed, peering at the nametag with his one working eye. "Oh. That's an.. odd name."
"What is it?"
"My eye is blurry, but from what I can see, it says.. Figure," he replied.
"Oh." Figure replied. "That's an.. unfortunate name. What's yours?"
"Umm.." he flipped up the nametag from his white shirt. "S..Seek."
"Oh c'mon, of course you get the cool name," Figure joked."Hey, Figure is cool too," Seek replied. "It's.. ominous."
Figure scoffed, then flinched, wincing, as an announcement speaker chimed. He put his hands over his ears, and Seek watched, confused—the bell wasn't that loud.
The door, which was made of metal bars, slid open with a long, drawn out screech, and Figure flinched again, putting more pressure on his ears.
When the room was silent again, Figure slowly took his hands off his ears, and met Seek's eye, confused by Seek's confusion.
"Are you alright?" Seek asked.
"I was just about to ask you that!" Figure exclaimed. "How did you not cover your ears?"
"It wasn't that loud.." replied Seek. "I suppose you did hear my heartbeat a few minutes ago."
"Yeah, and it was incredibly loud!""HEY!"
Figure flinched, his hands quickly meeting his ears. Seek's head shot toward the door—he was met by a tall person in a sterile white suit."Get moving," they growled. Seek tapped Figure on the shoulder, taking his hand to help lead him toward wherever they were being taken.
The two followed the tall person, being brought out to a large clearing, surrounded by a massive metal wall. A bunch of other kids sat in the neatly cut grass—they were all in the same sterile white clothing.
Seek led Figure to an empty spot, next to a shorter kid with long, unwashed jet black hair that fell over their eyes. Their nametag began with an 'S,' but Seek couldn't make out the whole word before the voice in the front began to speak.
"Welcome, children." The voice was calming, yet there was a hint of malice to the tone. "You have been brought to this exclusive institute, so that I- we may study your powerful abilities."
My powers! Seek had forgotten about them. Now probably wasn't the best time to use them—although he wanted so badly to escape, he'd rather escape alive.
"My powerful abilities?" muttered Figure. "Like what? Being blind?" He looked over at Seek with a toothy grin, and Seek flinched; this was the first time he had seen Figure's dangerous teeth. They were all incredibly sharp—three rows of massive blades.
Seek chuckled awkwardly, averting his attention back to the speaker. He ran his cold hands along the soft grass and took a deep inhale of the chilly air—it was the freest he'd felt since he'd been taken away. The speaker finally finished talking; they had said something about lunch. Seek hadn't realized how hungry he was until his stomach rumbled excitedly at the mention of food.
A man in a white coat led the group of subjects back inside the sterile building. Seek took Figure's hand as they began following the man.
"What?" Figure turned toward Seek, a sharp tooth poking out of his closed mouth.
Seek looked around, confused. "What?"
"You whispered to me.""Uh- no I didn't-"
Figure let out a pained roar as a loud scream quieted the clearing. It was followed by amused laughing, mixed with angry, confused growling.
"You- you should have seen your face-!" the amused voice attempted to catch his breath in between laughs. He sounded very young---eight years old at the most. A lot younger than Seek, who was around.. sixteen? Fifteen? He couldn't remember all that well.
The young voice shot Seek back into the present. "I was like EEAAAHHH!!!! And you were all like RAAAAGGHHHHH!!!"
Disoriented, Figure looked around, his hands still pressed over his ears. Seek growled and, in anger, put a stop to the amused laughter.
Dripping black hands shot out of the ground around Seek's feet, scooping up the bully and holding him by his legs. He let out shrill, short screams, one after another, until Seek dropped him on the grass—exhausted by the sudden power usage.
Figure turned around toward the sound of the boy being dropped on the grass. He took a slow step toward him, his footsteps shaking the ground and echoing off the wall. He let out a low, angry growl, and then a loud, pained roar as a dart shot into his back.
"FIGURE!" shouted Seek, running toward his fallen friend. He rested a cold hand on Figure—he was unconscious, but still breathing.
"STEP AWAY!" a loud voice roared. Seek screamed and let the hands take over again—but just as he was about to win, a dart lodged itself into his arm, and Seek fell unconscious as well.
