chapter one: "i was planning to take a leak"
― what lies ahead

"It isn't working." Esther frowned as she attempted to light the campfire.

Mack smiled slightly as he stood up fully from where he was leant against a tree, "That's because those branches are too dry."

The girl slowly looked up at her brother with creased eyebrows, "Too dry? That's a contributing factor?"

"Yeah, it's weird, I know," Mack nodded, crouching down next to the girl and taking the flint and fire striker out of her hands before he moved the firewood around on the pile and successfully lit the warm flame. The brunette glanced back at the tent that they had been sleeping in for the past couple of weeks, "So, what do you think, miss real estate?" He asked, "A cosy three bed, no bath with a claustrophobic feel?"

Esther let out a laugh, "Could sell it for millions."

Branches snapped behind them and the twins spun around, seeing the rustling of trees. Mack's hand slowly reached for the survival knife that was on his belt, his hand clenching around the handle as a figure emerged from the treeline. They both jumped before relaxing once they realised it was their mother emerging from behind the trees.

"Jesus, mom," Mack sighed, running a hand through his hair, "Give us a warning first. Gonna make us think you're a crank."

Robin chuckled with a small smile, "Sorry, next time I'll wear my cowbell."

"How much longer do you think until we move again?" Esther wondered from where she sat on the log, her knees pulled tight to her chest.

"We'll pack up our stuff tomorrow morning," Robin told them, "Then we'll continue to Atlanta."

"We're low on food." Mack told the woman with a small frown.

Robin raised an eyebrow, "How low?"

Mack reached into his camping bag and pulled out a handful of granola bars, "That low."

"Shit." Robin whispered, running a hand over her face.

"What happens when we run officially out?" Esther asked.

"Well, then we run out." Mack shrugged.

Robin kicked her son's shin, "Then we'll have to hunt."

"But none of us can hunt."
