Matts life wasn't great before the outbreak, but it sure as hell was better than this. Anything was better than this - even living on the alcoholic street with his mom. He walked down the damp hallway, lined with mud and mould, and thought maybe it isn't really that different. But then blood dripped from his shoulder, reminding him of the injury. Matt clasped it with his other hand.

Maybe a bit different.

He limped past Joel and Tess's room, ignoring the raised voices he heard inside and stumbled next door. Matt leant against his tabletop and rummaged around his cupboard for something to treat his wound. It wasn't fatal or terribly-serious but it stung like a bitch.

He slid his shirt off and held a wet towel he'd found against the wound. Matt had been too close to the firefly's next target and ended up with a chunk of skin missing and his shoulder feeling out of place.

The draws contained nothing. All pills were taken and all bandages were used.

Matt sighed as he threw his bloodied shirt back on and walked outside. The talking next door had stopped so he assumed it was safe to go in. Matt stood outside the door for a moment, contemplating what to do. He sighed and knocked three times. What other choice did he have? Bleed out?

"Hey Tess! He grumbled, not even trying to mask his exasperation. "I'm coming in."

He was in pain, he had no supplies and Tess wasn't answering. Matt pressed his ear against the door, he couldn't hear Joel either. The apartment was empty. He reached for the door handle and pushed down.

Unlocked.

Surely Tess wouldn't want him to bleed out right? Joel on the other hand...

Matt thought he heard shuffling coming from inside the room but no protest nor answer came, so he walked in. It was only a few bandages, right?

As soon as Matt swung the door open, a small girl pounced at him. She clung to his back, knife threateningly in hand. Matt fell to the floor and clutched his shoulder, kicking the girl away.

It was then that Joel jumped up from the couch, suddenly awake. The crash that Matt had made falling to the floor had startled him and Ellie was now scurrying back at the sight of the all the blood.

"What've you done?" Joel whisper-shouted, gesturing to Matt lying on the floor.

"I didn't touch him, I swear I didn't." She replied, quickly defending herself with various different ways of saying 'I didn't do it', as she shuffled around.

"Well now he's bleeding across my floor and i'm pretty sure he's unconscious." Matt heard a hint of concern in Joel's voice, which made him feel guilty for what he had been about to do. Slightly. Maybe. Stealing bandages wasn't really the worst crime he'd committed.

"Not Unconscious." Matt whispered, slowly trying to sit up. Neither Joel or mystery girl rushed to help him.

"What are you doing here?" Joel asked accusingly, once he was back on his feet. Joel was staring down at him with his hands upon his hips.

"I came to see if Tess was here. See if she could patch me up or somethin'."

"Well she ain't." Joel huffed, crossing his arms over his chest. I can see that he thought angrily.

"What's she doing here?" Matt asked, extending a hand out to Ellie who was still on the floor. She didn't take it, instead standing up and began sulking over to the couch. "Who even is she?"

"That's none of your goddamn business." Joel replied, inching forward. He threw an arm out in front of the kid and she looked back at him quizzically.

"Joel-."
