CHAPTER TWELVE !

GAME ON

————✩ ————

ASTRID DIDN'T HAVE MUCH TIME TO SETTLE BACK AFTER ARRIVING IN BEACON HILLS before she was swarmed by people asking what had happened. Well, the people were mostly Lukas, whom she went to visit right after leaving her suitcase at home, to know how he was doing.

Lukas had been surprised at seeing her at his front door on a random Wednesday afternoon but after a few seconds, had immediately hugged her and invited her in, telling her how much he had missed her over the spring break and the week and a half she had missed school.

"Relax, Lukas, it was, what, three weeks at most? But I'm happy to see you too," Astrid had told the brown-haired boy with a chuckle. Soon enough, Lukas started bombarding her with questions. "So, tell me, how was Los Angeles? What happened? How's your family?"

Astrid sighed, trying to put on a blank face not to show her grief. After contemplating everything that had happened in Mystic Falls on her way back to California, Astrid had managed to accept some of the sadness provoked by her brother's death but it was still a touchy topic.

"Well, it was... chaotic, to say the least. My family's kind of all over the place to be honest. But that doesn't really matter anymore. How was your spring break?" She tried to change the subject quickly, not wanting to spend too much time reminiscing the events that had taken place in Mystic Falls or having to lie too much to Lukas. Lies by omissions weren't as bad, right?

"Meh, my dad was supposed to come to visit but he canceled last minute. Again. He said he had an important meeting, or one of his children was sick, I don't even know anymore," he told her while plopping himself on the sofa. "I didn't do much, catch up on some homework. Then, I had to take care of Cassie most days since my mother still had to work." Lukas didn't seem to have spent a particularly exciting holiday. "But now that you're here it's going to get better. You're going to the lacrosse game at the end of the week, right?"

A lacrosse game? Thinking of it, Astrid remembered having heard about the championship game taking place sometime soon after spring break. At first, she wasn't particularly enthusiastic but, on second thoughts, she guessed it would allow her to get her mind off all the trauma and the grief. She could allow herself one evening not wallowing over her feelings alone in her room.

She shrugged, "I guess. When is it? Friday?" Lukas nodded.

"They might make a little speech about what happened last week," Lukas told her but, when he saw her confused face, he understood she had no idea what he was talking about. "Oh, gosh, you don't know, do you?" he asked her while putting a hand to his mouth.
