I had been working for a few days solid and hadn't really been at the dorms. According to Nezu only Bakugou was staying at the dorms over the break. I thought I should check up and make sure nothing was on fire. The dorms were surprisingly neat and clean although there were a few things that needed doing.
I entered Bakugou's room and found the explosive hero sitting on his bed, his back to me. "Bakugou,I need you to do some jobs for me " I said, but he didn't respond.
"Bakugou" I repeated louder this time, he didn't move. Was he seriously ignoring me.I walked over to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned to face me, but his expression was blank.
"Bakugou I don't know what sort of petty thing this is, but you still need to do the jobs" I said my voice louder than before. He hadn't even met my eyes when I spoke, he was looking lower on my face. I traced his gaze and saw him looking at my lips?
Suddenly my brain pieced it all together, he couldn't hear. He hadn't known I'd came in and he hadn't been ignoring me, he couldn't hear me. And his avoiding eye contact was him trying to read my lips so he could work out what I was saying.
"Bakugou, can you hear me?" I asked, speaking slowly and clearly, making sure I was facing him so he could read my lips.
He shook his head.
"Bakugou, can you understand sign language?" I signed to him.
He nodded.
I gestured for him to follow me out of his room and into the common area, where there was proper light. Once there, I began to sign to him, asking him what was wrong.
Bakugou's expression softened as he began to sign back. "My hearing aids broke," he signed. "I can't hear anything right now."
My heart sank. I had no idea Bakugou had hearing aids, but it made sense now. "I'm sorry, Bakugou," I signed back. "Let's go get you some new ones."
We left the dorms and headed to the nearest store that sold hearing aids. Bakugou tried on a few different models, but none of them seemed to work properly.
As we were leaving the store, Bakugou signed to me again, his frustration and sadness clear in his movements. "What if they don't have any that work for me?" he signed.
I put a hand on his shoulder, trying to comfort him. "We'll find a way, Bakugou," I signed back. "We won't stop until we do."
We returned to Bakugou's room, and I continued to sign to him as we waited for an idea to come to me. Suddenly, I remembered something.
I dug through my bag and pulled out a small device. "Bakugou, have you ever heard of a cochlear implant?" I signed.
He shook his head.
I explained to him what it was and how it worked, and he seemed interested. We made an appointment with a specialist who could perform the surgery and went through the process of getting Bakugou set up with a cochlear implant.
The day of the surgery arrived, and I could see the fear in Bakugou's eyes. He was scared, and I didn't blame him. I stayed with him throughout the entire process, signing words of encouragement to him.
When the surgery was over and Bakugou woke up, the first thing he did was look at me with tears in his eyes. "I can hear," he signed. "I can actually hear."
I smiled at him, tears in my own eyes. "I'm so glad, Bakugou," I signed back. "You deserve to hear all the amazing things this world has to offer."
But then Bakugou's smile faded, and his eyes filled with tears once more. He signed to me, "I didn't realize how much I was missing. I didn't realize how much I relied on my hearing aids. I feel so helpless."
And then Bakugou broke down in tears, the weight of his newfound hearing overwhelming him. I pulled him into a hug, holding him as he cried.
"It's okay, Bakugou," I signed to him. "It's okay to feel overwhelmed. We'll work through this together."
