Today was another day in the empire of Dahome, and currently, our princess was annoyed with the fact that all of her attempts at going to the market had been stopped by either meetings or having to go on small day trips with her brother.

It had been about a week or so of her trying to go to the village market, but today she was going to go no matter what, already dressed and ready to go, her braids up in their usual style.

Once dressed Y/n was grabbing her things when Shante walked into her room.

"Going somewhere?" She asked, watching the princess look over at her.

"Just the market, is something wrong?" "No everything is fine, I just wanted to check in on my husband's little sister" Shante stated, always trying to have a power match with Y/n, the princess never taking part.

"Well tell my brother I'll be out for a bit" "I will" Shante grinned before walking off, Y/n rolled her eyes before finally leaving her room, walking through the palace, greeting the guards and advisers as she went over to the palace gates.

Once the gates had been open for her, Y/n had taken in a breath, a smile gracing her lips as she watched kids running around playing, people chatting, and such, everything feeling like a fresh breath of air compared to being inside the palace.

But now the princess had set off to the cart vendors, already beginning to buy all sorts of jewelry and trinkets, getting a lot more than what she had asked for thanks to the woman throwing in extras for her.

"Are you sure Tangni (auntie)? I can pay for the extras" Y/n offered, already having a basket full of the finest silks and jewelry the market had to offer.

"It is no problem My princess" the woman smiled, handing Y/n the jewelry, the princess still paying her a bit extra before walking off, about to get one of her favorite street desserts before seeing a beautiful ring that she just had to get.

So now the princess was walking over to the cart, seeing a man running it.

"Well if it isn't the princess, what can I get for you today?" The man asked, sort of looking like a crook, but Y/n didn't want to go off based on looks.

"I'd like to have this ring, it's just so beautiful, I'd love to have it" she explained with a small smile that would quickly fade away.

"Hm sure, but I don't take money, I only trade" the man stated, Y/n began to look through her bag to see what she could offer, even looking through the basket of new items she had.

"No need princess, I think you already have something to trade" "huh?" "How about your hand in marriage? Or if that's too much for a girl like you, then allow me to have a night of fun with you" the man grinned, this sort of stunt never be taken lightly, especially towards The princess of Dahome, King Ghezo sure to kill the man if he knew.

Before Y/n could respond, obviously shocked and disgusted, someone had spoken up before her.

"I'm sorry but last I checked that is no way to speak to a woman, especially if she's the princess of Dahome" it was Izogie, currently in her battle clothes, palm oil making her skin glisten in the sun.

At first, the man was caught off guard, but to add to her silent threat, Izogie had set her sword on her shoulder, standing there unfazed, missing the way Y/n had looked over at her.

"Now give the princess the ring" Izogie demanded, the man allowing Y/n to grab the ring, scared for his own life.

"Good, I'm glad you understand the number one rule" Izogie grinned before placing her sword back in its sheath, gently placing a hand on the small of Y/n's back so they could both walk away.

"*sigh* these men need to learn better" the Agojie shook her head, sticking with me as we went over to the dessert cart, the woman already having my dessert ready and packed, the feeling a little heavier than usual, the older woman winking at me as I paid, knowing she had given me extras.

"Mhm, but thank you, I'm sure you have other things to do," I say, the warrior taking my things out of my hands and carrying them for me.

"Those things can wait, I'm sure Nanisca can understand the duty of taking care of the princess" Izogie grinned at me as we walked through the palace gates.

"Are you sure? Aren't you going out for battle tonight?" I asked "I go to battle practically every week, this is no different" Izogie explained, seeming unfazed, but from what I heard this would be a four-day mission for the warriors.

"But I should be questioning you, Princess, why were you out of the palace?" "Cause I don't want to be stuck in there all the time, I want to see my people, be with them like any other person" I reasoned, my mother always teaching me how important it was to form connections with your people.

"Hm, you don't like talking about palace drama all day and having your servants take care of things?" Izogie questioned, obviously poking fun at me a little.

"Nah that's for my brother's wives to do" I joked as we walked through the halls, finally making it to my room, Izogie sitting everything down for me.

"Anyways thank you again for your help today, is there any way I can repay you?" Even though she seemed to not mind, I felt bad having Izogie walk around with my things in hand, acting as though a personal guard for the day.

"There's no need for that, but if you want, you can treat me to some whiskey when I get back" Izogie grinned "I'll have it ready for your return" I smiled, seeing the warrior laugh a little at my statement before making her exit while I organized everything from today.

Eventually, Abeni walked in once I was done, the woman hanging out with me in my room, the two of us talking and indulging in the dessert I had gotten.

"Oh, she's protecting you now huh?" "She's an Agojie, it's her job, Abeni" I rolled my eyes, hearing the woman suck her teeth at me.

"I know that, but this was completely different, and she even carried your things, even though she didn't need to"

Abeni was just listing things off from today and I swear she was more invested in my love life than even myself.

But as the day went on the two of us were laying down, Abeni truly like a sister to me.

"You should let me do your makeup one day, it'd be fun" Abeni offered "if you want to, I wouldn't mind" I shrugged, Abeni getting excited with my answer, telling me all the things she could do.

But as we talked, I slowly started to fall asleep, the cool night air a nice contrast to this morning's heat, my sheets and pillows soft against my skin as I drifted off, Abeni falling asleep before me as I followed suit for the night.
