We had grown closer to one another with the passing of the years I had just turned seventeen and he was 2 years ahead of me. I'm glad that I had made a friend down here it made my life feel much richer than it was. He wasn't as cruel as everyone thought, at least not towards me. I can understand that at a distance he might look intimidating with his hard cold eyes, and the way he stood but when ever our glances were to meet one another I saw determination, passion, and a glint hope.
I found myself thinking of him often during the day wondering if he was getting into any trouble. Sometimes I wish I could be by his side instead of at this clinic with the sick and the dying. It was quite depressing when it came down to it. Often after I would get done with my work I would go upstairs to the room and cry myself to sleep. Levi would always some how know when I had cried the night before and would ask if everything was alright, if someone had hurt me. I would just wave my hand at him and say everything was fine, no need to worry about me, that I was tougher then I looked. The only real time I would leave the clinic was in the wee hours of morning. Levi would often be waiting outside the clinic to walk with me and keep me company at a spot we had discovered one day as we were exploring. It was on the outskirts of town where we had heard that a 10 meter hole had opened up and demolished some homes, the town deemed the spot to dangerous and ended up abandoning the area form further development.
It was always before dawn when we would end up there so we could look out at the small patch of night sky where we would watch the stars together. It was nice to have his company while we sat there on a blanket I would bring from the clinic and put on the one small patch of grass that was there. We would just lay next to each other in silence as the stars slowly twinkled out giving way to the dark oranges and reds of dawn, until the sky grew brighter filling the hole with light. It felt like a whole different world laying on that blanket with him so close to me at that special spot where the sun could reach us both.
I had a small medicinal herb garden growing there, to help heal the sick and wounded. I had also planted a special plant right in the middle where it could receive most of the light that I had been caring for since I first got my apprenticeship at the clinic. It would be very soon that I would be able to harvest the leafs to make a delicious tea. I had received this small plant from the first patient that I had cared for. She had given me that plant as payment. When I first got the tea plant it was so small and pathetic. It had been under nourished and looked like it was about to die. It somehow reminded me of how I must of looked back then. It grew, and so did I.I was watering my tea leaf plant, thinking how it would soon be time to cut back the leafs to make a good black tea. I wanted to share the first cup with Levi to tell him thanks for being such a good friend to me over the years. I brought my eyes away from my watering to glance at Levi who was seated on the blanket, his long slender fingers delicately fondled the underside of a leaf he was looking at it deep in thought.
"What does this plant do?" he said suddenly looking up and startling me. With his sudden eye contact with mine I looked away quickly hoping he didn't notice that I had been staring at him. Calming my self at his sudden gaze I made my way around to the edge still feeling he's eyes upon me as I went to where he was seated and kneeled next to him. "That one is called Shiso" I extend my hand to one of the leaves to touch it too, I smiled at the plant, knowing it will be used to help people. "We use it for when people get sick, it also helps with food poisoning too." I said absentmindedly thinking of how I wished I could grow more down here, but it was so hard to do for lack of sun, and not to mention lack of resources."I just wish, I could do more" I said in a disappointing tone more to myself then to the man sitting next to me.
I felt a warm hand on my shoulder, turning my head to look up at him. He was now standing next to me. Every time he reached out for me reminded me of the first time we had meet when we were younger. He had some how turned more into a man in the last year or so. He still looked the same maybe a slight taller, but the thing I noticed most was the fact that his shoulders were wider, when did that happen? I wondered.
