The sun was shining brightly on the quiet streets of London town as Noel walked down the road towards your flat, the sound of his worn-in boots tapping against the concrete with each step he took. He had been thinking about you all day and couldn't wait to see you again. Having spent the last two weeks together, it was easy for Noel to grow fonder of you with each minute that passed when you were near him. The rush he felt being in your presence, from the feel of you hands clasped in his to the feel of your gaze locked with his, he craved more of the special feeling he got when he was around you.
Now, it was the beginning of a work week for you and he knew you were tied up in responsibilities, making him low in the rung of your priorities. Yet, as the hours ticked by he grew increasingly restless. When you weren't replying to his texts as much, he felt a tinge of worry. It crossed his mind that you could use a break from work, maybe even some cheering up. And he was the best at providing distractions from the mundaneness of life.
Taking matters into his own hands, he threw on his favorite leopard print jacket and set out to meet you. When he arrived at you door, he knocked lightly and waited for you to answer, his hands retreating back into the too-small pockets of his paint-splattered blue jeans. His heart race picked up speed as he heard your footsteps approaching.
When the door swung open, he was greeted with a quick smile before you went back to typing away on your laptop that you held.
"Hey, Noel," you said, barely looking up, engrossed in the work quite literally at hand. "What are you doing here?"
Noel's heart sank, his spirits deflating like a burst party balloon. He had been hoping for a bit more enthusiasm from you.
"I came to see you, my love," he said in his familiar soft inflection. "What are you up to?"
"Just working on some stuff for work," you replied, still focused on your screen, its harsh white light illuminating your concentrated face.
Instinct told you to step out of the way for him to enter your home, but the work you were wrapped up in took up all of your thought process. You didn't even realize when he had walked inside, pushing closed the door on the assumption that he was either inside or decided to stay out. Either way, you were determined to finish this project, with or without him.
By now you had made your way over to the couch, where Noel followed closely behind, plopping himself down next to you and hoping to get your attention.
"Well, what kind of stuff?" he finally asked, an expression of inquiry mixed with a look of longing fixed on his face.
"Just some emails and end of the month reports. Nothing too exciting," you said, still not breaking your squinted eyes from your computer.
One look at you only confirmed for him that you were too busy to partake in anything other than work. He sighed and leaned back against the couch, running a hand through his raven hair. He couldn't help feeling a little jealous of your work, which seemed to be taking up all your attention. He wanted to spend time with you, take your mind off of it all, but it seemed like there was no way you were going to be able to tear yourself away from this.
The gentle sound of your voice filled the room as you mumbled to yourself, calculating numbers as the keyboard clacked away, while your boyfriend Noel sat with both of his feet up next to you, listening to you talk while thumbing through his phone. The sound of your voice was something of music to him, your laughter like heaven. He simply couldn't get enough of all that you were, craving, aching, pining for an ounce of your attention — anything that you would so graciously bestow upon him.
Gazes of fondness and admiration from his ocean blue eyes always made your cheeks prickle, you knew he loved you deeply just in the way he looked at you. His eyes studying every inch of your face as if it were the last time he'd ever get to see you again, his toothy grin revealing just how much of a softie you turned him into with your mere presence. You cast a spell on him without even trying.
It was only natural for Noel to yearn more of your attention, especially when the two of you had been nearly inseparable a few weeks ago. Yet, being tied up with the seemingly never ending demands from work, you just couldn't. Not now, at least.
"Hey, are you listening?" Noel asked, poking you in the side.
You jumped a little and looked up, surprised. "Oh, sorry. What did you say?" You were zeroed in on typing that you hadn't noticed he asked you something.
"I was just asking if you wanted to do something together. We could go for a walk or something, you know, get your mind off things," your boyfriend suggested, undeterred. "I promise I'll make it worth your while."
You smiled apologetically. "I'm sorry, Noel. I really need to get this work done. Maybe we can do something later?"
Instantly, Noel felt a little disappointed but tried his best not to show it on his face. "Yeah, sure. Just let me know when you're free."
He stood up to leave, already preparing in his mind what he would do alone with the rest of the day, but before he could, you grabbed his hand and pulled him back down onto the couch.
"Actually, can you stay with me while I work? I could use some company," you said truthfully.
You could sense how much he wanted to spend time with you, but the thought of disregarding work altogether seemed impossible. You didn't have the heart to watch him leave, unable to resist the pleading look in his eyes, knowing he'd come all this way to see you in the first place. It was clear that he cared immensely for you, possibly beyond words could say, and you weren't about to let him slip away not knowing that you cared for him equally as much.
"Of course, love. I'd be happy to." Noel's heart leapt with joy upon hearing your proposal, his emotions being strung around like a rollercoaster since the thought of you entered his brain this morning.
Without saying another word, he settled in next to you and watched as you typed away on your keyboard. Every now and then, you would stop and ask him a question, or you would joke with him for a few minutes about funny little movie references before you went back to work. The lighthearted air about him alleviated some of the stress on your mind, letting you know that even if you didn't finish your project, it wasn't the end of the world. And even if it was, at least you had him by your side to make it all seem okay.
As the day went on, Noel found himself getting more and more comfortable on the couch, his head resting on your shoulder as you worked. He could feel your warmth and smell the sweet scent of your hair, and it was all he could do to keep himself from wrapping his arms around you and holding you tight. It may not have been the most exciting or emotionally revolutionizing time spent together in the world, but Noel was content just to be near you.
Finally, as the sun began to set outside, you finished her work and shut your laptop before turning to him with a smile. "Thanks for keeping me company, Fielding. I really appreciated it."
"Anytime, love," He grinned back at you, feeling a bit giddy upon seeing you now devote your full attention to him. "You know I'm always here for you."
You leaned over and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. "I know. And I love you for it."
Noel felt his heart soar with happiness. Even though you had been busy all day, you had still found time for him, and that was all that mattered. As the two of you cuddled up on the couch, watching the night creep in outside the windows, he couldn't help feeling grateful for the simple pleasures of being with the one he loved. Just the mere warmth of your touch could melt the remnants of the winter snow on the ground, disintegrate what walls he had guarding his heart, and sustain him for a lifetime.
