The Universe in Those Eyes

Enid was running up the stairs two steps at a time - backpack hanging off one shoulder, cleats swinging from one hand - when she heard the pen fall just as she reached the second floor landing. Instinctively she bends down, reaching to grab it for whoever dropped it when she sees another hand reach for it. Retracting her hand and snapping her head up, Enid is caught.

It is one of those cliche moments where time freezes. The blackest eyes, wells with the depth of the universe come up to stare back at her. A scowl graces the face across from her, in a way that makes Enid suddenly want to know what was bothering this girl. If a reaper had come to take Enid in this moment, she thinks that maybe she would even go willingly.

That is Enid's first impression of Wednesday Addams, before she even knows her name is Wednesday Addams. Not her all black attire, or her pitch black hair that is so dark it sometimes reflects into a different color in the sunlight, although Enid learns that later on.

Then time unfreezes as the girl's hand retracts all the way with the pen in hand and she gets up, walking around Enid as if she did not exist. Stunned, Enid stays in her crouched position until the familiar voice of Yoko asks with all the judgment in the world, "Girl, what are you doing?"

From then on Enid starts noticing the girl, always lurking in the corners and shadows. In fact, it was almost like she was made from the shadows. Most of all, she finally notices the girl sitting in the back of their home ec class.

It doesn't surprise Enid that she had completely missed a person. She may do amazing in soccer, but when it came to focusing in classes, she had always had difficulty. Not to mention home economics was the bane of her existence. Things like cooking, sewing, evaded her and the truth was that anything finance related would actively wage war before it willingly entered Enid's mind.

"Today I'll be grouping you all into partner groups for our one week family simulation project", Dr. Weems announces.

Groans erupt throughout the class. Usually Enid would groan along with them, but she knows better than to do that in Weems' class.

Enid doodles in her notebook, not quite paying attention as she makes her little wolf doodle stick out her tongue and wag her tail.

"...Enid Sinclair."

Eyes widening and head snapping up in a panic, Enid looks around for help. Everyone is hurrying towards their partners already.

Everyone seems to be moving away from her. Then out of the crowd comes the girl that she had been trying to learn more about ever since she had seen her in the stairwell. The girl looks her up and down, as if considering her and then nods, simply sitting down next to her and clasping her hands gracefully and waits. She just stares at Enid until it's uncomfortable.

"Uhh... howdy, partner!" Enid said, fixing her face into a grin and hoping it covers for the way she has no idea what this girl's name is. She only raises her immaculate eyebrow.

Frantically behind Wednesday, Yoko waves for Enid's attention. "Let's uh..." Yoko points to the front where the whiteboard is. "Read the whiteboard!" Despite Yoko wearing her signature sunglasses (how they were not against the school dress code, Enid didn't know), the rest of her face showed exactly how off base Enid was. Glancing back at Wednesday, Enid knew she wasn't doing much better. Wednesday had crossed her arms as if waiting for her to continue.

"Read the whiteboard and uh... uh..." Yoko taps her wrist as if there was a watch there and then waves at the board again. "And check the time..." Yoko visibly facepalms this time.
