At night, San Fransokyo comes alive.
Billboards and buildings alike turn vibrant colors and light up the black sky. Streetlights, bridges, vehicles speeding off into the dark, they all shine like stars on earth, lighting up the city with thousands of colors, making it a breathtaking sight to behold. And up above, floating against a gentle wind, are hundreds of blimps of varying size and hues, complementing the city's majestic appearance, and making it, with no doubts, one of the most beautiful cities in the whole world.
A pity not everyone realizes that.
Val doesn't mind that, tho. If anything, it makes the city even more precious: She gets to fantasize that the marvelous sight is for her and her alone.
It started out like an ordinary day.
She went to school, came back. Did her homework, hung out with her friends. She was dragged to a party, where she stayed until two am, and then she was on her way home.
Except she didn't make it home.
She lived in a small town, back then. Basically just one block, considering how big San Fransokyo is. In the edges of the city, the roads were made of dirt and streetlamps were worlds apart. The party was held in a building at the very edge of town, just before the outside routes, so she was heading to one of her friends' house, which was nearby.
With her phone's battery out and her friends too drunk to walk with her, Val was alone, accompanied only by her own sleepy thoughts.
She went uninterrupted in her little walk through the dark until, out of nowhere, a car appeared in her way.
The car's lights' weren't on.
All Val got to do before it hit her was to think 'oh, is this happening?'
And then she went flying backwards, towards her death.
Well, that's a lie. Death came after the motherfucker driving the car decided she was as good as dead and ran her over, with one of the wheels going straight over her neck. That's a technicality, tho, as she still ended up dying.
And wasn't that an experience.
Dying.
Being dead.
It was actually quite nice: Peaceful, black, and fulfilling, in a way? She's pretty sure what she experienced was not being a thing that exists, and honestly, she was good with that. She really was.
But then...well, she doesn't know exactly what happened: It happened too fast, and at the same time, it felt like it lasted an eternity.
But, lo and behold, Val got to live again.
...she's very interested in meeting whoever made her be born again. She swears she only wants to talk-
Time went flying after that.
She got new parents, which reminded her so much of her own that she spent her childhood crying. She was in a different reality, as everything was a cartoony 3D style. She was in a different country, seeing as everyone spoke English (Though she got to keep being an Argentinian thanks to her dad, god bless-). And, one of the most important distinctions to be noted apart from the whole 'new reality thing', she was in a different time. One look outside could tell her that: There's no way that level of technology existed in her year.
It was a bit overwhelming, honestly. But at least she got to keep her first name.
Valeria. Valeria Storm.
...she thinks she likes it.
She adapted pretty well to being reborn, actually. Sure, the knowledge that she wouldn't see her family again was saddening, and the fact that her family was mourning her corpse while she was out there living her life made her feel dead on her feet, but, all things considered, she was managing very well. Until her parents took her to kinder.
It was annoying, boring and draining having to be with a bunch of four year olds alone in a closed room, but Val was willing to put up with it if it meant that her parents wouldn't think she was some kind of baby prodigy. But then pick-up time came.
And Tadashi-fucking-Hamada walked through the door, ready to take his baby brother home.
Sure, he looked young. But in the 3D animated style the world was, he was still recognizable. Also, he had his iconic cap. And Hiro - how did she not recognize him before - squealed out his name the moment he saw him.
Her hopes of not looking like a prodigy were promptly thrown out a window. She needed all the advantages she could get if she wanted to survive the shitshow that was her new world.
Like studying mechanics. There was no chance she wasn't getting into San Fransokyo's Institute of Technology now.
All in all, her parents took her sudden interest in science pretty well, considering she was a four-year-old. Not that she could do much yet, only read articles whenever she could steal her mom's phone or watch videos explaining basic engineering. Still, Val wasn't going to budge in this, she was gonna build her own giant robot, whatever it took.
Oh, and change the future, while she was at it. Not doing anything when she knows what will happen would be Yn-ish of her part.
Val had to wait for that, tho. All she could do at the time was keep on learning and stay away from Hiro.
Fortunately, they didn't go to the same school. Having two prodigies in the same place would be too attention catching.
Primary and high school were a breeze with her past knowledge and her early studies. At twelve she graduated, and Val was finally free to go to the Institute.
...except Hiro joined at fourteen, and as much as she didn't want to interact with him, she still wanted to see his adventures, if the show were to happen in this universe.
Which left her two years to spare.
...well, setting her plans into motion this early on wouldn't be so bad.
Tadashi deserved to live longer, after all.
Thus, her first and most important project, the one that would change the course of history, came to life:
Project Berk.
