I was strolling downtown with a plastic bag on one hand. I had just finished buying some groceries and happened to stop by my favorite flower shop, I saw how beautiful the daisies looked and decided to get myself some.
Angela, the florist and co-owner of the shop, asked me if I wanted some red roses. I politely smiled and said I wanted daisies this time.
"Hi, Jennie... It's been so long since I last saw you. Do you want the usual? These red roses just came in."
"Actually, I just want those daisies." I timidly smile, pointing towards the bucket where the daisies were placed.
"Just wrap it in kraft paper."
"Sure thing." Angela immediately began arranging my order while I wait and look around.
"It's been what, almost a year?" Angela asked, prettily wrapping up the flowers and asking me a color for the ribbon.
"You want a pink ribbon?"
"Black please..." I smiled, walking towards the counter.
"Your taste had changed." She noted, printing me a receipt.
"Sorry. Not to be nosey or what, but I just got used to serving you red roses with pink ribbons every week for two years." Angela apologizes, getting my credit card and handing me my bouquet.
"Well... some things change." Was all I said and flashed her a small smile.
"Hmm, indeed..." Angela hummed, returning back my card with a smile.
"Jennie?"
A familiar voice called. I look around and found the last person I expect to see— a tall blonde girl, wearing a long brown coat and white sneakers.
The girl responsible for me sleeping in tear-drenched pillows every night. The girl responsible for breaking my heart into million little pieces, and the reason why I've been somehow happy for a couple of summers.
"Jennie..."
It was the first time I saw her in almost a year. What a bittersweet encounter.
"Rosie..." I whispered her name the way I used to. I find myself uttering a familiar name, and yet somehow now, the very same name felt foreign against my tongue.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, my curiosity getting the best of me.
"Oh... uh... I'm here to get flowers." You replied, getting a little flustered.
"Oh, but of course." I raised my hands and tilt my head to the side, smiling awkwardly.
"What will it be for you, ma'am?" The florist asked.
"A bouquet of lilies please, and please wrap it in light yellow and white cellophane wrap."
Angela smiled and nodded, leaving us to attend to Rosie's order. I was about to leave as well, but before I can bid my goodbye, she asked something that caught me by surprised.
"Are those for someone?" She curiously asked. Her eyes staring— keenly searching for answers.
"Oh, no, just for me." I said, genuinely smiling.
"Oh, so you haven't—"
"No." I shook my head, cutting her off before she could even finish her question. I look at her and saw that she still wants to further ask, so I decided to spare the both of us of the awkwardness and decided to tell her what I assume she wants to hear.
"I've been busy with work. I recently got a promotion."
Rosie nods along and smile, and so did I. She murmured a low 'congratulations' and I said a shy 'thank you' in response.
"To be honest, I like being on my own better." I say, unknowingly slipping up. I glance at Rosie and find her looking at me with an apologetic smile.
"Anyway, I'm sure you're here to get some flowers for your girlfriend."
"Yeah."
You found the one. I think I can finally face that I'm not the one— never was the one.
"Congratulations, you finally found the one." I say, flashing her a sincere smile.
"Yeah, I think you're right Jen, I think she might be the one." Rosie grins like a happy puppy.
I know she's in love, I know that look all too well.
For I happen to see her grin like that for two years. I happen to be the receiving end of those flowers, expensive gifts, affectionate words and sweet nothings.
But she wasn't what she appeared to be and God, did I dodge a bullet. I'm lucky to have found an escape before it all became too much for me.
"I'm sure she is." I say, all too familiar with hearing those words.
"I'll leave you be, then. Nice to see you around."
"Nice to see you too." Rosie replied and we shared a small smile for the last time before I walked away.
I wanted to ask Rosie to treat her new girl better— to treat her like she's someone perfect, someone divine. Someone special, someone good inside. Because I don't want her to hurt like me.
But I know deep down she won't be enough.
She will never be enough.
For just like what she did with me, soon she will be looking for another. Just like how her new girl replaced me, someone new will replaced her.
And it was never our fault to begin with, it's just the way she is. She's just someone so caught up with finding the one that someday she will be left alone with no one. Because a girl like her can never be contented with what she has.
She'll keep on saying she found the one, but really, it's just another one.
