Moonlight spilled through the lace curtains of an 11-year-old girl's room, weaving silver threads across the walls and softening the edges of her world. A porcelain doll gazed blankly from her dresser, its glass eyes glimmering under the pale light. Scattered books, plush toys, and colored pencils lay like fallen stars around the bed where Angela Spears slept beneath a quilt stitched with fading pink stars.

Her breath came softly—steady, peaceful—until the dream began again, pulling her from the safety of her sheets into a world of haunting precision.

The air within it was heavy, almost sacred, steeped in the metallic tang of rain, the acrid bite of woodsmoke, and something ancient that tasted like dried roses and sorrow. Angela found herself barefoot upon a marble floor so frigid it felt like standing on shards of glass. Towering obsidian pillars rose toward a vaulted ceiling veiled in shifting darkness, their shadows stretching like skeletal fingers across the grand hall. Somewhere, thunder murmured—a low, rhythmic growl that vibrated through the very marrow of her bones, echoing through the ribs of the decaying mansion.

Then came the sound of footsteps—the frantic, uneven rhythm of slippers slapping against stone, growing louder with every desperate breath.

A girl appeared from the far end of the corridor, her white gown fluttering like the broken wings of a moth. Her hair caught the flickering candlelight like strands of gold spun from a dying sun, her face a mask of porcelain terror. She stumbled, her palms scraping the abrasive stone, before pressing herself behind a massive pillar. Angela could feel her trembling, the girl's heart hammering against her own ribs—a wild, trapped bird seeking escape from a cage of shadows.

The silence that followed was suffocating, thick enough to drown in. Then—slow, deliberate footsteps, each one a sharp, ringing sentence of doom.

A man stepped out of the darkness. His eyes glowed a deep, unnatural crimson, shimmering with a primal hunger that chilled the air. His skin was as pale as sculpted marble, his movements fluid and predatory, lacking the friction of human life. The long folds of his black cloak rippled behind him like ink spilled in water.

"Did you think you could hide from me, little dove?" His voice was a whisper wrapped in velvet and venom, vibrating with a terrifying intimacy.

The girl whimpered, a small, broken sound. "Please... have mercy."

He smiled—slowly, thinly—showing a flash of ivory that held no warmth. "Mercy is for the living," he murmured, caressing the pillar with long, pale fingers. "And you, my dear, are simply looking tasty."

He lunged—fangs bared, a blur of darkness and sharp intent—but before the strike could land, another figure burst from the shadows, seizing the attacker's wrist with a sound like a thunderclap.

The newcomer's strength was quiet yet absolute, radiating a heat that pushed back the hall's unnatural chill. His eyes were not red but a deep, fierce hazel, burning with a protective fire. His grip was unyielding, and when he spoke, his voice was a low, resonant calm that anchored the chaotic room.

"Not tonight. Not her."

The red-eyed vampire snarled, a sound of grating metal, and the two blurred together in a storm of fangs and fury. Candle flames bent and broke, shattering hot wax onto the marble. The walls trembled with each impact as the protector drove his foe backward. Their movements were too swift for human sight—claws scraping stone, teeth flashing like sparks in the night, shadows dancing across the jagged remains of fractured mirrors.

Then, in one decisive, bone-shaking blow, the darkness shattered.

The evil vampire fell back into the void, vanishing as though the mansion itself had unmade him. Silence flooded back into the hall, broken only by the girl's ragged, sobbing gasps.
