after the filming session had concluded, the seven of them and manager lee found a spot in the nearby park to relax. manager lee had spotted an ice cream truck and got them all popsicles to reward them. she sat with the girls, popsicle in hand as she read their schedule for the week on her phone.
"oh yeah, yuki."
her head shot up.
"huh?"
she'd been zoning out for the last few minutes. like she had all day. she couldn't stop thinking about it. she wouldn't even have noticed that there was melted raspberry popsicle dripping from her hand if kirin hadn't handed her a napkin from her purse.
"it's your turn for novacovers. it's due before friday, okay?"
she nodded.
god. novacovers. she'd completely forgotten about that. novacovers were a playlist on the supernova channel. each month, in age order, a member would create a cover. it could be anything they wanted, dance, rap vocal, anything. lex had mocked beomgyu by playing the krusty krab song on her recorder for it once. the reaction from the fans was priceless.
the last time it was yuki's turn was seven months ago. she had chosen a dance cover to the song 'take you dancing' by jason derulo. she still remembered staying up until the earliest hours of the morning with jungwon to choreograph the dance. that was probably her favourite moment with him.
on the tour bus ride back she was still thinking about it. she had no idea what she would do this time.
she took her phone out and opened spotify. maybe she would find some inspiration on there.
she searched through her playlists.
her eyes landed on the collaboration playlist she'd made with jungwon. he added something to it.
the song was 'only' by leehi.
without thinking, she pressed play.
yuki recognised the song immediately. jungwon had put it on his sleep playlist. he had put on the playlist and shared his earphones with her a few weeks ago when she was struggling to fall asleep.
she wanted to cry and smile at the same time.
it looked like she'd found her song.
the next evening she was recording with her vocal instructor, jina. the two were meant to finish an hour ago.
but yuki stayed back in the studio to keep going and finish today.
she readied herself, playing the music.
she closed her eyes and took a sharp breath, realising she was not, in fact ready. she didn't think she would ever be ready. not without jungwon. but the music was already playing in her headset for what felt like and probably was the hundredth time today.
be my only one
이렇게 부르고 싶은 이름
내 곁에손을 잡고서 같이 걸어요
yuki held back tears as she tried her hardest to just sing and not think.
비가 오는 밤에도 외로웠던 낮에도
그대 환한 빛깔을 내게 가득 칠해줘요
내가 더 잘할게요 이렇게 같이 있어준다면
she mentally prepared herself for the pitch rise. she didn't think she would make it past the chorus. the tears were threatening to spill now.
now I believe
라랄라랄라라 부르는 노래
찾고찾고 찾아 헤매이던 그대와
a singular teardrop fell from her cheek. she tried to ignore it. it fell on the side of her face that was not facing the camera. she at least had a small chance of this being her final take.
my, oh my, oh my, oh 내 사랑 be my only love
she gave up. pulling her headset down and putting it around the back of her neck. she could still hear the instrumental playing faintly with the speakers still so close to her ear. she reached over and paused the music.
yuki closed her eyes hard and let the tears fall. she was stupid for staying back. she should've just left with jina. she was stupid for choosing this song. she knew she would only hurt herself.
she was stupid for thinking she could do anything without jungwon.
why had she let herself get so attached? and after the second time? she should've held her guard up. even if she had thought he'd changed since the two of them were just meek little fifteen-year-olds.
he'd fooled her once. and that was shame on him.
but now he'd fooled her twice. and this was shame on her.
she stared at the wooden floor and sighed deeply.
she would have to come back tomorrow. it was dark out and probably freezing.
she took off her headset, hanging it on the mic stand, standing up and trudging over to the door. she took her coat and her scarf and headed out, locking up behind herself.
yuki walked down the empty street. it was just as she'd expected. cold and dark. as she plugged her earphones into her phone and put her playlist on shuffle she looked around.
she shoved her numbing hands into her pockets and let out a puff of white air and she sighed.
yuki paused as she stopped by the arcade she'd been with jungwon at on his birthday. it was still open. she had a few coins in her pockets.
she walked inside and went straight to the machine she'd been struggling with. the adorable huge my melody and kuromi plushies calling her name. maybe this time the gods would have some mercy on her. you know, post breakup and all.
she inserted her coin and wrapped her fingers around the joystick, moving the claw around until she found a plushie that was in a decent spot.
she felt her heart race with excitement as the claw reached down and held onto poor melody's head, picking it up. this was going so much better than last time.
when the plushie fell into the hole she wanted to squeal with excitement.
she took it out and looked at it proudly.
her little moment was interrupted when she felt a tap on her shoulder. she took out her earphones on one side, turning around.
she almost dropped her newly won plushie when she saw who it was.
