To Make an Example of

As the inmates finish their dinner and work, they are left to roam their individual pods for some time. Ami remains hidden away in her cell while most of the other inmates sit at tables and play cards, read books, or walk and talk. Some of the inmates even start whipping up their own food from their commissary.

Ami sits on the edge of her bed and stares downstairs, watching the inmates. She looks over to see the guards behind a large plexiglass window, each either talking to one another or staring at computer monitors. There is a heavy steel door between the pod and the guard station that also leads down the hall and to the rest of the prison.

As she watches them, she spots Switch walking around in the pod. She watches her walk over to a short woman. She is brown skinned, but much lighter than Switch. Her hair is long and black. It is wavy and reaches down to her lower back.

"So, you the bitch talking shit behind me and Rose Reaper's back?" Switch says.

"You talking to me?" The short girl says.

"Yeah, you, you dumb bitch," Switch says, pressing her finger into the girl's chest.

"Bitch don't touch me," she says as she swats Switch's hand away. As quick as her hand gets swatted, Switch punches the woman square in the face, knocking her off of the table and onto the floor.

"What was that, you cocksucker?" Switch says, raising her voice, "Get up, bitch, I'm not done with you." The girl gets up, looking mildly fazed, but she gathers herself.

She goes to swing at Switch, but she grabs the girl's arm and throws a punch into her gut, causing the woman to hunch over and grunt. Evidently not learning her lesson, she stands again. She attempts to uppercut, but Switch steps back, then steps forward and kicks her in her left side.

The girl stumbles to the right, but she does not fall. Switch steps forward again, grabbing the woman's head and pulling it down, raising her knee with all the force she can muster. When her knee connects, a resounding crack can be heard throughout the pod. The girl almost flies backwards and lands on the ground, lifeless.

Throughout this entire display, the guards simply stand back and watch, knowing that interfering would likely cause one of them to get injured as well.

Switch grabs the girl by the hair and drags her to the middle of the pod. She lifts her for everyone to see and looks around, up and down the pod.

"This is what happens to any bitch who wants to fuck with me or Burning Rose," she says, making sure her voice echoes through the pod. She then drops the girl on the ground and turns away.

Shortly after, everyone returns to their normal activities while the guards take the woman out of the pod and presumably to the infirmary. While the guards take her out of the pod, Switch walks over to a group of girls and starts a card game.

Unsure what to do, Ami curls up on her bed, staring at the wall. She is happy that this is only a single man cell, but if the other inmates were not so bad, she would not mind having someone to talk to. She was scared, but she had to at least try to hide it. She was going to be here for a long time, so she might as well try to adapt. Slowly, she began to drift off to sleep.
