Letting Her Go

Ajax was the first to arrive. She collapsed into his arms, sobbing.

"I'm sorry, I tried to convince her to tell you."

Pushing away, Enid didn't quite process what he said. "You...what?"

"I...I'm sorry. I had found her after the dance that night and she was having an allergic reaction but then she didn't want to tell you...I tried to convince her, I really did..." Ajax rubbed the back of his neck nervously, as if waiting for her anger. If she was angry, it was certainly righteous. The fact that her close friend and ex-boyfriend knew about her girlfriend's condition and didn't tell her.

The shock on Enid's face morphed into understanding and fury, "That's why she ran away." Everything fell into place.

Every moment. Part of her was relieved because this could possibly mean that Wednesday wasn't against physical touch with Enid, but a large portion of her was enraged. How dare Wednesday keep something like that from her? No, it wasn't even that. Wednesday had stated she was allergic and Enid had forgotten. That was Enid's fault, and she would take the blame for it.

Except Wednesday had chosen not to do the simple act of reminding her, even when her life was in danger.

Ajax's eyes widened at the face Enid was making at the room they had wheeled Wednesday off to. He did not envy Wednesday Addams. In fact, he was scared for her, because it looked almost like Enid was plotting murder.

Wednesday looked upon her, and Enid felt so relieved that she almost forgot to be angry, barely able to keep the expression of rage intact.

"Who are you?" Enid's world came crashing down. She couldn't breathe. Never would Enid have thought this was a possibility.

Walking into this room, Enid had though to slap Wednesday, scream at her, maybe for a brief second, even wrap her hands around Wednesday's neck just long enough for her to get the message as she forced Wednesday to communicate.

With those three words coming out of Wednesday's mouth, Enid's entire world came crashing down. "I... I'm Enid." She doesn't have the strength to say girlfriend.

Watching as Enid packs her things slowly, shooting her hopeful looks, Wednesday forces herself to remain silent and emotionless. It's better for Enid, Wednesday thinks. Pretending to not remember their history has been painful, but this way Enid's life won't be affected by Wednesday's affliction. Enid could move in with Yoko, and live her life how she dreamed, believing that she had moved out because Wednesday was going back to the Addams mansion to recuperate from her memory loss. Letting her believe that was better than the possibility of seeing Enid's smile melt off her face from dealing with Wednesday and her allergy.

Still, the final red bag that Enid starts stuffing her clothes into makes Wednesday flash back to her first year at Nevermore and the pain which she felt when Enid had left for a simple few days.

They stand awkwardly at the doorway as Enid finishes rolling all her luggage to the door. It's awkward for the first time in forever, and it kills Wednesday in a disgustingly uncomfortable way.

As Enid steps forward for a hug in her all too plain and white clothes, Wednesday stands stock still like a statue. Luckily, Enid steps back. "Right. Not a hugger. I forgot." She turns around, moving to the door and unlocking it at a hellishly slow pace. Every rotation of the suitcase against the floor grated against Wednesday's ears.

Wednesday loathes the voice that begs Enid to look once more at her, so that Wednesday can remember her face, her beautiful lupine features, before Wednesday lost her forever. It doesn't happen, and the door clicks shut.
