The footsteps of numerous operatives echoed throughout the endless maze of halls. Nigel's base was long, complex, and dangerous. It was designed that way for the sole purpose of confusing anyone who dared step foot into his territory. It gave him a chance to strike, which is why the main operators of the long, tedious mission they had nicknamed "OPERATION: REBELLION" were obscured by a couple dozen trooper operatives. These operatives served as a willingful shield to them, ensuring they wouldn't lose anyone key to the mission as they attempted to gather more information about what they were truly dealing with. Although, the five weren't just there for additional information. They were keeping a sharp eye out for anything loose. A single wire exposed in the ceiling could be their ticket to a break from Nigel. Even a single day of inconvenience for him was time for them to work...
But unfortunately for the Rebellion, Nigel's base was heavily defended.
He didn't have any fancy machinery or troopers keeping him safe, because the thing keeping him safe was the complexity and density of the structure he had built for him and his small team of mostly unknown operatives. Even the wires were quadruple-wrapped with a tough steel covering, completely impenetrable if you tried to use the 2x4 technology of earth. Hoagie regretted teaching him what he hadn't already known about security, and sometimes even blamed himself for their difficulties.
Things seemed hopeless. They weren't finding anything in the long, desolate halls of steel, and they hadn't found anything to tamper with..."Wait, is that a wire?"
Chad pointed to a small, black wire hanging out from the lower half of the wall, close to the floor.
"Nice find, Chad! I was starting to think this would be a botched mission," Rachel laughed, "but you've always had an eye for detail."
Hoagie got onto one knee with his bag. He was the one in charge of doing the 'dirty work', because he knew what he was doing more than anyone else. If anyone should need to tamper with electricity, it would be wise to trust Hoagie with it.
"Ah, darn it... Abby, this is your bag!"
Abby took a peek into the bag she had taken, and realized it was filled with Hoagie's stuff. She had taken his bag.
"-Don't bother. Just- give me something to cut with, will ya?"
Abby handed him a pair of wire cutters. They were a bit rusty, but did their job. Hoagie snapped the wire in half, causing the power in that sector to shut down. The emergency lights that lined the floor immediately flickered on. At first, they cheered silently at their success. Much to their dismay, however, the main lights flickered a few times before starting right back up. It was like they hadn't done anything to them at all.
Hoagie squinted at the lights above them. "Dang it! He probably has a backup generator..."
They all directed their attention to a speaker on the wall, which began emitting an obnoxiously high-pitched static sound. Within a few seconds of the atrocious sound, the sound of clapping came out. It echoed just like everything else.
"Well, look what we have here," the familiar yet oddly scratchy voice spoke, "you managed to find a wire I failed to cover... Congratulations, I guess. That's, what... A day or two of repairs? Psh..."
Rachel cupped her hands and raised her voice, "anything to hold you down, you backstabbing asshole!"
"Oh, whatever... Do you want me to act for you all?" Nigel tapped the microphone a few times. "Oh no, so inconvenient! Oh, boo hoo! Waaah, I say! I'm so distraught!"
The group gave subtle glances at each other, affirming that they all felt the same way about Nigel's sarcastic and passive aggressive remarks.
"-Hey... All jokes aside, I was actually waiting for you guys to show up! I have a new pet I wanna show my closest friends..."
