Over the next two weeks, Kai and I made it a regular habit to meet outside the back of the school at lunch, go to Kai's house on Fridays and Wednesdays and mine on Mondays and Thursdays. It's a lot of fun because we always have a good time when we're together.
Today, I'm visiting the doctor's office for a monthly check up right before heading to Kai's place on a Friday afternoon. The doctor says I'm healing nicely, but for the last two weeks, which is in just three days, I'm going to have to wear patches over my eyes to protect them from any and all light, and put medicine on the patches that will help somehow. I don't know how to take that. I don't actually comprehend it until later tonight.
Right now, I'm at Kai's house. I'll think about the patches later. We're sitting in the living room while Kai is talking about his latest escapade with the police when there is a knock on the front door.
"That should be the girls." Mako goes to the door. It opens and there are sounds of excitement of three people seeing each other.
"Mako! How are you?" A low woman's voice.
"I'm good! How about you guys?"
"We're good, thanks for having us!" A different, higher voice. Still female.
"We brought the chicken and chicken salad! 'Cause we know Bolin likes his chicken!" I have to hide a gag at the mention of eating chicken.
"Korra and Asami are Mako and Bolin's friends. Some funny history, Mako dated both women before both realized they were lesbian and started dating each other. They're still good friends but it was so awkward for a little bit; I could not stop laughing when Bolin told me the girls started dating!"
Wait, like Asami Sato and Girlfriend Korra?
Crud.
"Great! Come on in! Kai has a friend here so-"
"Jinora?!"
I jump at the sudden shriek of my name. "Uh, that's me." I hear a rush of heeled footsteps and someone comes closer.
"Oh my gosh, how are you? I couldn't remember your address so I couldn't find you again. I've been wondering how you've been since that night."
I'm not sure what to say. This woman blinded me. This woman took my sight from me and rendered me almost totally dependent on other people. I should be fuming. I should shout and scream.
"I'm so glad to see you're ok." Asami laughs, embarrassed. "Honestly, I was worried about you. But you're ok right?"
But I can't bring myself to.
"A-actually I'm not. Um...That light was so bright it kind of burned my retinas. It's getting better but I can't really see much right now." I take off my glasses and show her, and she and Korra both gasp in horror.
"Oh my gosh..." Asami breaths. "Jinora I am so sorry! I didn't know it could do that to someone! Oh goodness, is there anything I can do?!" I shake my head.
"I don't think so, no. I mean, they're starting to heal, and I'll be all better in maybe a month or so. I'm ok."
"Ok..." Korra is awkwardly trying to break the tension. "How about we get dinner started? Is Jinora staying?"
"Yeah-"
"No." I cut off Kai. I don't know how to feel about being back with Asami and Korra. They seem nice, but it's awkward. And they only brought chicken, so that'll just make it worse.
"No, I need to be home. I have a lot of homework. Kai, can you call my dad?" I dig my phone out of my pocket and hand it to Kai. He takes it, but doesn't do anything.
