"Then Jareth said, "fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave. Sarah looked at the Goblin king and said, "Damn it, I can never remember that line." Looking at him, she finally remembered the words that she was searching for.

"You have no power over me," Sarah stated matter of fact. Then like glass had shattered, Jareth threw the crystal ball in the air. As it shattered on the ground, Sarah had returned to her world.

"Goodbye Sarah," said her friends, as they waved farewell to the girl in the human world." Sarah closed the book, finally finishing the book and saw her granddaughter in tears.

"What is wrong Lizzy," said Sarah to her granddaughter.

"Grandmother, why did Sarah say those words to him? Could she not see that he was in love with her," she asked with sad teared eyes.

"Well, my love, here is what you need to know," Sarah stated, taking a breath.

"The goblin king cannot love. All he knows is power and cruelty," she tried reassuring her granddaughter.

"I cannot take it anymore," exclaimed Elizabeth.

"I will love him. I will be his wife," she announced to her room. Sarah chuckled at her granddaughter. "Okay sweetheart," she said to her granddaughter, hugging her.

"Now it is time for bed," she motioned, pointing to the bed. Elizabeth climbed under the covers as her grandma tucked her into bed.

"I love you my dear," she told her sweet granddaughter, kissing her forehead. Coincidentally, in a tree outside of the window, a snowy owl was perched, watching the two together.

Chapter 1

I awake from a weird dream. One that I remember from my childhood. When grandma Sarah read me the book, Labyrinth, to help me fall asleep. I miss her. I still cannot believe that my grandmother passed away several years ago. She was my best friend. These days, mostly at night, I always cry in my sleep. Mom usually comes in and tries to soothe my crying, but it does not seem to help.

I get up and walk over to my desk, which I use for putting on makeup and working on my homework. In one of the drawers, I keep that book that my grandmother read to me all the time as a child. I get the book then close the drawer. Then as I go back to bed, I clutch the book to my chest. This book was the last thing that she gave me before passing away. It is my most favorite possession. Then I slowly fall back to sleep with the book in my arms. I thought, in the corner of my eye, as I fell asleep, I saw a beautiful owl. However, it could have been my imagination.

The next thing I know, the alarm blared to life and awoke me with a song from U2. Looking at the time, it was 6:00am. "There is a chance of storms and lightning. For the kids going to the bus stop, please make sure to have an umbrella handy," said the announcer on the radio.

"Why does it have to rain," I grumble, as I get out of bed. I got into the shower and the hot water was a nice welcome to my body, so I could wake up. As I was getting dressed in jeans, a sweater, and my favorite brown leather jacket, I heard mom yell from downstairs.

"Elizabeth Sarah, if you do not come down here now, you are not going to get any breakfast," she announced to the house. Grabbing my jacket, purse, backpack, and umbrella, I turned the lights off in my room and shut the door behind me.

Trotting downstairs, I saw my brother at the table having cereal and toast. Hearing the toaster pop hot bread, I grabbed a slice and put butter on it. Then a horn made me jump.

"Bye mom, thanks for breakfast," I say rather quickly, grabbing an orange juice from the fridge. Then I went out the door and got on the school bus.

"Hi Liz," said my best friend, Ally. I give her a hug and we start discussing the lab we were going to do today. I did not know how I felt about having to cut open a frog. My stomach was in knots just thinking about it.

It seemed like the day just dragged on, when I was at school. It was as if it was not going fast at all. I just wanted the day to be over with. The bell rang and it was 6th period. Dang it, I had swim class. Today we had to compete with each other. As much as I loved to swim, I did not like competing against people.

"Okay people this is how it is going to work," stated the swim coach.

"We are going to be doing this in teams. Once one person comes back, the next person in the team will go after. The team that comes back first will get snacks," she added.

"Glasses down. First person, get ready. In 3....2...1," she stated. Then a whistle blew. The first person in our group went into the water. The 3 other people in my line, including myself screamed at our teammate to hurry. We ended up 2nd and we were proud of ourselves. Finally, it was the last period of school for the day and a start of the weekend. My last period was home room. Thank goodness I got most of my homework done, except for science. It was not my favorite subject.

The bell rang and I rejoiced that it was the weekend. It was not just a regular weekend. It was the weekend that I was turning eighteen. As I got on the bus to go home, Ally comes up behind me and hugs me.

"Happy birthday bestie," she states, excitedly.

"Oh, and I am getting off with you. Dad and mom will be coming later for the party," Ally added.  I was excited that my best friend was going to spend the afternoon with me.

Once we got to the house, mom and dad shot some party streamers at me.

"Happy birthday," they exclaimed as I walked through the front door. I laughed excitedly.

"And welcome Ally. It is good to have you here for Lizzy's eighteenth birthday," said my dad.

"Wouldn't have it any other way Mr. W," she responded.

"For dinner tonight we decided to make it easy and just order pizza. We got your favorite, pepperoni," said mom. The girls got excited instantly. Then going to Elizabeth's room, they put their backpacks on the floor next her desk.
