Blaire stared at the hellish scene with wet eyes, this was their home mere minutes ago and now it was turned into the depths of hell. Her eyes darted frantically back and forth at the growing fire, it's flames taunting her, something that once brought her peace and calm now burning through her.
They had nothing, not even a single coin to their name. Everything she owned was in that house apart from the nightdress she was wearing which was now torn, wet and smothered with mud.
She breathed frantically as the realisation of what had happened sinked in, squeezing the handle of her blade so hard that her nails reached the other side of her hand and broke skin.
No words could escape her mouth, there were no words to describe how much she was feeling, how many different emotions wanted to burst free. The anger began to boil quicker than the rest causing her to make a sudden sprint for their decapitated house. She needed revenge, she had to kill, even if it was just one of the fuckers, she needed to feel the warmth of their blood on her skin.

Hal stood and watched Blaire as she stared back at the scene that was the life they had made in the month prior, he was angry too, he felt the loss but he had already lost so much. The moment she started running he was after her.
It took longer than he wanted to catch up to her but his desire to keep her from doing something stupid, the desire to not be alone and the fear of losing her too drove him forwards and he eventually closed the distance between them. Hal tackled her into the long grass of the field, wrapping one arm around her waist and the other around her shoulders, pinning her to his chest as the two tumbled to the ground and rolled.
Hal's grip on her tightened and he held her close, pushing his head against her shoulder before he rolled over and pushed her hands up above her head, pinning them in the grass while he pinned her torso to the ground with his.
He was quiet as he stared down at her, his expression was also of anger but it softened while looking at her. "Don't...." The words slipped from his lips. "There are too many and I will not lose you. I refuse to." Hal was angry about their home but the truth was the only thing he'd thought about the entire time they'd been escaping was her. That emotion was reflected in his voice as his fingers relaxed against her wrists. "You're everything to me...."

Blaire grunted as Hal took her down with force, the only thing on her mind was to break free from his grip and keep going, but he was too strong, it was as if she was stuck in cement. However, she continued to kick and attempt to thrash from beneath him.
Eventually, she stopped struggling and looked up at him while panting frantically. The anger slowly began to lower to a simmer and her breathing calmed, his words took her by surprise and turned her attention away from their life and to him only.
"I'm sorry..." she whispered while continuing to work on catching her breath. The stinging of her bare feet now coming to her attention since the clouds of anger covering her mind were clearing. Hal was right, they were both alive and that was the main thing, If he hadn't been alarmed then they may not have woken in time and that fire would have ate them whole.
"I just want peace." Her voice broke with sadness laced with frustration, almost allowing herself to cry but turned her head towards the tall grass to control her emotions.

Hal understood how she felt, he'd gotten so used to the idea of being able to live the rest of his life out in peace that he couldn't think of any other way of living. But that was gone now. He released her wrists and brought one hand to her cheek to turn her head so they were looking at each other. "I know...I know. One day we'll have peace, but that day is not today. Today we have to run."
