Snow sighed as she watched Percy’s sleeping form. The waves had been moving them up and down, not a lot but frequent enough for Snow to feel a little dizzy. So she thought to look around the boat for distraction. Right now, it was Percy’s sleeping form, on the excuse it was temporary.
Her mind drifted to Clarisse and Tyson. Her heart ached for the latter. He was kind and adorable, the most likeable Cyclops Snow’s ever seen (though she hasn’t met many Cyclops). But he had a lot of heart, and was more human than any monster she’s encountered. Once Percy woke up, he was going to ask about Tyson, and Snow knew he would be devastated to recall what happened.
Despite his slight animosity towards him for the fact they were half-siblings, Snow knew Percy would not take the apparent loss well.
As for Clarisse, Snow had to tell herself that she was fine. Clarisse was strong–stubborn– but strong. She won’t go out that easily. Snow just kept repeating that thought in her head over and over to hopefully believe it.
“Are you still thinking about Clarisse?” Annabeth asked.
“And Tyson,” added Snow. “Mainly how Percy will take it.”
At the mention of Tyson, Annabeth shifted uncomfortably. There was an obvious discomfort and guilt surrounding her features. Her lips pressed as she thought about the Cyclops she was so hard on. Snow wondered about the kind of encounter Annabeth had with Cyclops to make her hate every one of them, including Tyson, who had been nothing but nice to her, so differently.
Still, Snow knew better than to ask someone about a personal event. She wanted to wait until Annabeth was ready to tell her about it.
“You’re wondering why I hate Tyson and Cyclops in general so much, right?”
Snow blinked, mouth parting open slightly. Annabeth laughed, saying her face was easy to read these days.
“These days?”
“Well before we went on that quest, you were kind of hard to read. Especially when it comes to emotions.”
“That was restricted to the Ares treatment,” Snow said.
“Even aside from that. Now I have an easier time,” said Annabeth. “I think it’s also because I’m making an effort to read you. Before we weren’t friends.”
Hearing Annabeth say they were friends elated Snow. It really confirmed all her guesses this year and she hoped that opinion doesn’t change.
“So, are you okay to talk about it or…?” Snow said, hesitating. “You really don’t have to, Annabeth.”
“I know, but I want to. You’re understanding, so I feel comfortable telling you,” she sighed, taking a moment to prepare herself. “When I was seven, I ran away from home. I thought my family hated me, so I ran. Impulsive, but… I did it. I met Luke and Thalia on the way and we traveled together for a while until we met Grover. He was leading us to camp, but he took a wrong turn. That wrong turn led us to a Cyclops lair. It separated us, using the voices of our loved ones to lure us into a trap. He got Grover, Thalia and Luke, but not me.
Annabeth paused, taking a moment to recollect herself as memories of that day flashed in her mind. Snow leaned over and took Annabeth’s hand that was clenching her leg comfortably. Annabeth visibly relaxed slightly, then breathed in and out to force herself to calm down before continuing.
“After some searching, I found them hanging upside down over a pot. When the monster saw me, he tried to lure me in by using my dad’s voice, but back then I hated him, so that didn’t work. And it was what saved Thalia, Grover and Luke because I stabbed him and used that distraction to free Thalia and let her deal with the rest.”
