Chapter One
Maybelle's POV
"Okay May, truth or dare?" Morris asked.
"Dare," I smirked.
"Ooh, brave goil," Oscar teased.
I rolled my eyes. "You two didn't raise a coward. So uh - what's my dare?"
"I dare you to ask Race on a date," Morris told me.
My eyes widened. "You wouldn't dare -"
"Actually," He started. "I just did. Good luck! We'll see you at the gate."
I groaned as they walked away. Today was my turn to let the newsies into the distribution center, and my brothers had to use it against me. They knew I had a crush on Race, and used every chance they could to embarrass me.
When I got there, the newsies were all teasing Race about something.
As I unlocked the gate, some of the boys turned and looked at me.
"Well good morning sweetheart," Race greeted when he saw me.
"Good morning Race," I smiled, trying to ignore the blush creeping onto my face. "How are you today?"
"Well, that all depends on how you answer my question," He told me.
"What question?" I inquired.
"Will you, Maybelle Analise Delancey, go on a date with me?" He asked, dramatically dropping down to one knee.
"I would love that," I told him. "I'll meet you at the distribution window at 6:00 sharp."
I lightly kissed his cheek and walked back to said window where my brothers were standing with Uncle Wiesel, awestruck.
"You actually did it," Morris muttered, handing Oscar a handful of coins.
I rolled my eyes and started counting papers out. I counted out the usual orders; 100 for Jack, 50 for Crutchie, 20 for Davey, 20 for Les, 50 for Race, and 30 for Albert.
Each boy grabbed their papers and headed off, some of them making sarcastic remarks, some talking about my earlier actions.
"20 newspapers please," Les smiled, handing me a dime.
I put the dime in the small collection box and handed him the papers.
"Hey Maybelle, is it true you said yes to a date with Race?" Jojo asked as he stepped up to the window.
"Yeah," I muttered, a light blush once more dusting my cheeks.
"Finally," He exclaimed under his breath. "50 papes, please."
He exchanged a quarter for the papers and kept moving. It only took about 15 minutes to get all of the boys their papers, a relatively quick time. Afterwards, while my brothers headed wherever they go during the day, I made my way to Brooklyn to talk to Spot, only thinking about my date with Race.
