Chapter II - A Silent Walk

The wind is beginning to become heavier and louder as the night sky crawls  over the light of the evening. The sunset is bright red and burnt orange with a small shade of light pink. The clouds are getting darker and the moon is becoming brighter as I walk down the path.

I have my long, dark brown drench coat on with a pair of leather boots that have the kind of fake but fuzzy fur on the inside, but they are two sizes too big. Hand-me-downs from Winter. I grumble as the click of my heels, on the path, rings in my ears.

I have my journal and a pencil in one pocket and a book and a small flashlight in the other.

As I round the next corner, I see the solemn bench in the fading light. I sit down, my butt is already cold. I decide to read instead of write, so I take my flashlight and book out of the pocket and begin to read.

"You really shouldn't be out here this late at night you know." I see the glow of a cell phone and I look up and point my flashlight at the direction of the voice. It's Winter. I must have lost myself.

"Oh, how long have I been out here?"

"It's twelve thirty a.m." She responds and sits next to me. "Mom and Dad are frantic over at the house.

"Oh."

"I'll call them and tell them you're okay." She dials the house number on her cell phone. "Hey mom, It's Winter... yes I found Summer, she's out on the bench reading... yeah, here she is." Winter hands the phone to me.

"Hi." I speak into the phone. On the other side of the line I can hear,

"Oh my goodness, Summer, we were so worried about you."

"I'm just outside."

"I know that now, but you have to tell us where you going, what time you'll be back. We worry too much."

"I will."

"Alright. Come back with Winter as soon as possible."  I hear a click and she's hung up. I hand the cell phone back to Winter.

"I'm really glad I found you." She says. "I wanted to tell you something and I also wanted to say sorry for earlier."

"Okay..." She doesn't reply. "Forgiven."

"Okay, " She starts immediately after. "I think Justin likes me."

I sigh. She's always thought Justin liked her.

"I know he's going to ask me out." She declares and giggles like this is something magical.

"How do you know?"

"I just know." She whispers, out of breath. "He's so perfect, you know?"

"No." I answer her rhetorical question.

"On the football, soccer, basketball and swim team, he doesn't smoke, the most gorgeous hair..." She goes on, but I stop listening to her there.

"Nobody is as 'perfect' as they appear." I cut her off.

"Well." She starts. "Justin is. And you wouldn't even know what perfect is. Just look at yourself!" Then she gets up and stomps, angrily away.

I manage to stand up and go home with her because I'm expected there. I shove the book into the pocket of my drench coat and point the extremely, huge, extremely clunky flashlight at the ground.
