I couldn't sleep. I sat up in my bed and looked around the room. No one else was awake. I knew I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep. I didn't trust this place, and if they were going to do something with us, they would do it at night, where no one would suspect a thing.
' Pssst'
I didn't know where the sound came from.
' Thomas, next to you. '
Kneeling down next to my bed was a boy. He wasn't from the Glade but I had seen him before at meal times.
' Come, follow me. '
' what? '
' Hey, you think this place is weird, don't you? So do I. '
He was right. I did think this place was strange. It's foolish to trust a person that you've just met, but it's also a bit foolish to put a group of boys into a maze and expect them to survive.
I got out of bed and the boy pointed underneath it. There was an open vent. So that's where he came from.
' C'mon, follow me. '
He got down on all fours and entered the vent. I took one last look around the room and then followed suit.
He paused outside a vent.
' Look ' he whispered.I leaned over the vent. There were guards, wheeling children on gurneys into a separate room.
I recognised one of the girls.
I had seen her earlier that day, she had said hello to me. She had been taken away by Janson as well as some others. Lily, I believed her name was. Janson had told everyone that they were going to the safe haven. It didn't look pretty safe to me.Once the guards had come back out of the room and disappeared down the hallway, the boy jumped down from the vent and beckoned for me to follow. The guards had accidentally left the door ajar, so we had easy access.
I was shocked with what I saw.
Bodies were strung up in cages, wires and tubes coming out of them at all angles. They didn't look dead, but they didn't look alive, either.
' Tommy? '
I spun around to find the source of the voice. It sounded like a girls voice, soft and feeble.
At the far end of the room, there was a separated room. It had plastic walls, so you could see through it. Inside was the little girl which I had seen earlier. The one that had recognised me.
I quickly walked over. The door to the room had no lock so I let myself in.
The girl, Kate, was sat on a hospital like bed and held a wet cloth to her forehead.
' Hey ' I said, gently. ' what are you doing here? '
She looked at me strangely. ' I get told to stay here. This is my room. I had an ordinary one, but I escaped. So they put me here. '
' But why? ' I started to slowly advance towards the bed.
' Because - ' Kate couldn't finish her sentence. She started coughing really bad, and she started shivering, even though the room was warm.I panicked. She saw me and pointed to a jar on a shelf. she indicated for me to grab it, so I did. I unscrewed the lid and handed it to her. She look out a sort of gummy, and swallowed it without chewing.
' Hey, you okay? '
She had stopped shivering, but still looked reasonably ill.
' I'm fine now. He tells me to eat one of those when I feel sick. It's the big needles they give me. I don't mind it though, because they say it protects me from the flare. 'I didn't believe that.
' Tommy. You have to go. This place isn't safe. The man is going to get you. Like he got everyone else. '
' Its okay, were gonna get out of here. '
' I saw you on the screens. The man showed me. '
' what screens? '
' in that big maze. With all your friends. I watched them die. He said if I was bad he would send me up, too. 'So they had been watching us. So why didn't they help us? They could have prevented so many deaths. Including Chuck.
' The other boy, ' Kate continued, ' his name is Aris. Tell him to get out of this place. Tell all of them, before it's too late! ' she sounded desperate, now.
' I will, I promise. And you'll be coming with us. '
