Drugs, Treasons & Other Demons
By HappyCoatiReview:
This dark and dramatic read gave me second-hand Stockholm Syndrome in the best kind of way.Gritty and raw emotion expertly interlaced with romantic hopelessness and dark humour result in an edgy and vibrant tone. One that allows the reader to become fully immersed in the cleverly crafted plot of this book, and fall in love with its endearingly dynamic characters.
Sarah is a bold and intriguing protagonist, with an honesty and wit that far outweigh her misunderstood nature and conditioned insecurities. Even when vulnerable, her intelligence shines through and she remains true to herself in the face of adversity, trauma and the crazy twists and turns of hostage life.
Pablo is a mad man created straight from the heart of a manic fever dream, and I'm here for it. I wanted so badly to dislike him as a love interest in the name of feminism and all that is holy... But liberty and virtue be damned if I don't want to be kidnapped by this lunatic crime lord! What can I say, I guess I'm loco that way.
Dialogue is purposeful, rich with intent, ripe with playful banter and rippling with ominous undertones. There is an expressive and nuanced manner with which each character forms their individuality and charm. Meanwhile characters develop naturally as layers of the MC's humanity are uncovered organically throughout their interactions.
The writing style is effortless and emotive. While not overly complex in vocabulary, there is an undeniable linguistic flair and execution of imagery and connectivity is profoundly impactful. Editing is done to an exceptionally high standard, with very few typos and almost no grammatical errors to be found.
Drugs, Treasons & Other Demons receives five out of five kisses and will be added to my reading list for those who wish to check it out. I highly recommend this captivating mafia romance to any reader looking to explore the darker, more toxic side of love.
Overall Rating:
Cover ⁴/⁵
An accurate representation of what the book entails, with a striking use of block font coupled with calming muted hues. I personally would prefer something a little spicier, but a great cover that sells the story nonetheless.
