(A/N: no that chapter title does NOT give you liscence to start singing 'let it go' lol)
Thankfully, the base in Canada had been following our progress, and were able to pick up the location of the hovercraft when it had blown up. They sent a rescue party to see if there was any remains, and we were pulled out of the water to safety.
"Every muscle in my body is frozen," shivered Preston, as we walked, a little shakily, out of the rescue hovercraft to the base. My eyes met Mitch's, who was waiting in the otherwise empty security room, and I watched him count one, two, three of us. His face fell, knowing Lionel hadn't made it. I loved him so much that it hurt me to see that look in his eyes. As soon as I was through the base's security check, I ran into his arms, and he held me tightly.
"You're safe," he breathed into my hair.
"Yeah." There was nothing else I could say to that. Mitch's companion and friend from the arena was lying dead in the hallways of the soviet hospital, whilst his arch enemy that had tried to kill him multiple times was alive and well. Mitch wasn't one to hold a grudge. I knew that much was true. But as to whether his forgiveness would extend as far as Vikk, I could not tell. Every time he looked at him, his face was expressionless.
Preston and Vikk stood behind me, waiting to talk to Mitch, so I released him from the hug. But before he would let me go he kissed me gently. I'd missed the feeling of his lips on mine, but somehow, this time it meant more than love. Perhaps it was the fact that Vikk was standing right behind me that made me feel it. Whatever it was, I knew part of the reason he had kissed me right there was to show to everyone else he wasn't letting go of me any time soon.
Preston and Mitch bro-hugged, which made me chuckle a little, because guys always look so awkward when they show friendly physical affection for one another. Mitch and Vikk said hi to one another, and I knew right away they were not going to get along at all.
"Oh, no we are not having this," I sighed. "If you guys can't get along then you don't get along with me either." They both looked at me, dumbfounded. The four of us stood there in silence, until suddenly, Preston saw the funny side of it and started laughing. His laugh was contagious, and soon I caught it and started laughing too. Mitch rolled his eyes at the two of us.
"Come on you two stop it," he complained. "Let's go and see the others."
We left the empty security buildings to go outside, where Emily, Jerome, and Ivory were waiting for us.
"Oh my gosh," smiled Preston. "Whilst I love you guys, I'm dying of frostbite, Canada's ocean is ice cold. I'm going to have a shower."
"I second that," agreed Vikk.
"Me too," I smiled. "We'll be quick and then we'll come and fill you guys in on what happened. Somewhere warm, preferably." The three of us began to jog towards the buildings.
"Wait, Abby, are you hurt?" Asked Mitch, noticing for the first time. I'd done my best to hide the injuries from him, not wanting him to worry, but he picked up on it as soon as I began running towards the buildings. I sighed, and looked at him, wondering, not for the first time, how nothing ever escapes his notice.
"Yeah... Arm and stomach. And before you blame either of the boys it wasn't their fault." He smiled very slightly at this comment. But the look on his face was sad.
"Same arm as the arena?" I nodded. He sighed. "Why do you always get hurt in those exact places?"
"I'll answer that when you tell me why you always hurt your leg," I chuckled. This brought a smile to his face. "See you in a bit," I smiled, and turned to catch up with Preston and Vikk. They were entering the building as I caught up with them. Preston looked at me questioningly.
"I told you I wouldn't let him blame you," I smiled. He and Vikk chuckled.
"Vikk is staying in my apartment with Ivory," Preston filled me in.
"Oh, did you go via the reception then?" I asked.
"Yeah, they allotted me to live with Preston," explained Vikk.
"I'll see you guys in a bit then," I said, as I came to the apartment door that I shared with Mitch, his sisters and brother, Jerome, and Emily.
"Later," they returned. I let myself inside the house, and after grabbing a change of clothes, I headed straight for the shower.
