Chapter 4

(Zoey POV)

My dad got home late last night, so I couldn't ask him how his date went. I walk downstairs.

"Morning." I mumble to my dad.

"Good morning!" He says in a good mood.

"How'd your date go?" I ask, looking through the cabinets for something to eat.

"It went great. We went to this fancy dinner place." He says. I nod and find nothing.

"We don't have any cereal." I say. My dad nods and puts that on the shopping list.

"I'm going to the store today." He says. I nod and look at the time. '7:43'.

"I have to go now, bye dad!" I say. I grab my things.

"Wait, Zoe, remember, give Tori a chance." He says. I don't respond. I walk out of the door.

I walk into the school. Hailey catches up to me.

"Morning." I say.

"Ugh. Morning. I hate mornings. They're like the worst." She complains. I nod.

"So listen, I'm having a slumber party on Friday, wanna come?" She asks, nudging me.

"Sure. I have nothing better to then watch Netflix all day." I say with a small laugh. Hailey giggles. Wanna know why Hailey is my best friend? She understands what I've been going through. Kinda. Her mother died when she was younger, along with her dad. She is a foster kid. But she knows how to listen to people, and she is caring.

"Hey! Psst, Zoe." I hear someone say. I look to my right and see Taylor.

"Yeah?" I ask her, confused on why she is talking to me.

"I need to talk to you, alone." She says. I look at Hailey. Hailey shrugs and walks away. I turn to Taylor and raise an eyebrow.

"Listen, yesterday I was walking to lunch, I decided to mess with Tori-" I cut her off, "Why would you mess with her? Are you crazy?" I whisper.

"Yeah..about that, so I pushed her, and she told me to stop, but I didn't listen, so she whispered into my ear, she said something like, 'If you don't leave me alone I'll do the same thing to you that I did to my Aunt.' So I nodded and left."

She explains. I sigh and ran my hand through my hair.

"You're telling me this why?" I ask.

"I'm just warning you, don't become besties with her again." She says. I nod and walk away. Hailey comes up to me.

"So what was that about?" Hailey asks. Tori walks into the school. I glance at her.

"Nothing. Give me a minute." I say. Hailey nods. I walk over to Tori.

"Are you freaking crazy? You threaten Taylor!?" I whisper to her while pulling her into the janitor closest.

"Good morning to you too, sunshine!" She says. I glare at her.

"I'm serious Tori, that's a threat, you could go back to jail!" I warn.

"Yes, I know. But she was messing with me. So I did what I had to do, got it cupcake?" She asks.

"For one, stop with the god damn nicknames, for two, Tori, don't do it again, got it?" I warn.

"Ah, yes I got it, but damn, you changed a lot, you're now cursing! What happened to the nice happy Zoey I use to know?" She asks.

"What happened was that her best friend got sent away and her mother died." I say and walk out.

It's now lunchtime and Hailey and I are in the cafeteria.

"Did you hear about Ashton and Taylor? The newest and hottest couple?" Hailey asks, leaning up on the table.

"I honestly don't care about that, but good for them!" I say, rolling my eyes.

"Aw, come on, you need a boyfriend." She says.

"And so do you." I say.

"Hey! I have my eyes on Tyler, but you need your eyes on someone." She says. Tyler is the schools president. He has blonde hair and brown eyes. He's a total hottie, but not my type.

"My dad went on a date last night." I say, changing the subject.

"Ooh, with who?" She asks, now interested.

"I don't know, it was a blind date." I say. My dad is 6'2 with brown hair and blue eyes. He has muscles and all.

"Hm, ask him when you get home." She says. I nod.

"Hello." Someone says. I look up and see Tori.

"Hi!" Hailey chirps. I look at Hailey like she's crazy. How could you be that happy when a murder is standing here.

"Hi." I mumble. Tori sits down next to me.

"My mom went on a date last night." Tori says.

"So did my dad..." I say. A light bulb goes off in my head.

"No. No. No. My dad couldn't go on a date with your mom.." I whisper. I'm in shock.

"Listen, it could've been with any man in this town, Zoe, don't worry about it, just ask your father!" Hailey says. I look at Tori and see her grinning to herself.

I nod and keep quiet.

If my dad went on a date with Tori's mother then they could get married! Then she'd be my stepsister! And then I'll be stepsisters with a murder! God no.

"Dad!" I scream when I walk into the house.

"Yes?" He asks.

"Who'd you go on a date with last night?" I ask.

"About that, she's coming over later with her two children for dinner. So it'll be a surprise." He says with a wink. I sigh and nod. Wait, Tori does have a brother, Zach.

God please don't let it be Tori's mother.
