I never thought I would be put into this position. No, not like this. Ever.
——
With my notepad and pencil under my arm, I walk around Pier 39, finding the perfect picture. In a buzz, my phone vibrates in my pocket. Reaching for it then checking immediately, I shrug. A friend request? I open the app up to see a friend request from a dark skinned, brown eyed, and bald headed cutie. "Doug Baldwin". Without thinking, I accept. I put my phone back in my pocket and take a seat on a bench near the sea. Admiring the beautiful horizon ahead, I start sketching to my heart's content.
But interruption fazes me. I pull out my phone once again to see a Messenger notification. Unlocking my phone, my new "friend's" bubble appears against my wallpaper. I touch the bubble to reveal the message. "Hey"
My gut tells me to do it. I type back, "Hi. I'm Vanessa, what's yours? 😜"
Weeks later
"Yeah, I got that...yes. No, I know that..." I hear from the other room.. Note to future self, when looking for another affordable and better place, don't roomie with a friend you barely know. Thinking that having to know a friend better than you barely know is a bad idea especially when you think, quote "think", that person is your friend.
"Uh Vanessa?" the frilly high pitched voice calls to me from the kitchen. I walk over to her, eyeing the loaded sink behind her. I attempt to keep my eyes from rolling in frustration.
"Can you do the dishes for me? I need to head out for an uh, emergency."
"Oh, another emergency huh?" I sarcastically ask.
"Yeah, sorry about that. Thanks girl!" She grabs her purse and walks out the door, slamming the door behind her.
"GLAD YOU'RE GONE MELANIE. GOSH DAMN BITCH!" I yell, letting go of all my emotions. I start placing all the dirty dishes into the dish washer and before I finish, my phone rings from the other room. I grab a towel, drying my hands as I walk towards my phone. I fling the towel onto the floor as I giddily answer the phone.
"Hey boo," I giggle.
"Hey," the man smirks on the other line.
"How are you?"
"Ready to facetime?"
"Oh babe..." I frown as I gaze at my face in the mirror. "Don't you remember, my laptop's on repair?"
"Repair? What'd you do this time?"
"I uh, made more videos. Another virus."
"Tch, you never learn do you?"
"No, I don't." I reconsider, so I put on some lipstick and some cover up. Not even that can cover up the amount of freckles I have nor the plump nose. I wipe the lipstick off my plump lips with the back of my hand. Nevermind.
