Rachel's fingers flitted across the keys of her laptop in a blur, bobbing her head to the music filtering through at a low volume. She had never really been one for homework, but despite what her teacher says, Rachel enjoyed history; she enjoyed learning about the past and found it fascinating how much society as a whole had evolved in such a short period of time.
Feeling parched, Rachel rolled her way over to where her mini fridge sat, plucking out a chilled Dr. Pepper, muttering along to the lyrics.
Upon the journey back to her desk, Rachel caught sight of that framed photograph of Liam and herself. She picked it up, gazing at it for a second. Too many emotions welled inside her chest, overwhelming her.
She slammed the frame face down, shattering the glass.
"Shit," Rachel cursed, scrambling to collect the broken pieces of glass. Gazing at a particularly sharp shard, she wondered how far it would-
Knock, Knock.
Startled, Rachel dropped the shard back into the pile on her desk. Leaving them discarded, the brunette rose from her chair and sprang down the steps to find Gizmo yapping at the front door.
"Gizmo. Couch," Rachel ordered. Immediately, the puppy ceased his barking and leapt up onto the sofa, waiting patiently. "Good boy."
Swinging the door opened, she gaped at the person standing on her front porch.
"Jules?" Rachel asked, bewildered, her brow creasing in confusion.
"Can I come in?" She was nervous - or scared - hands restlessly fiddling with one another. Wordlessly, Rachel stepped to the side, allowing the redhead to enter her humble abode.
Jules moved quickly, avoiding eye contact. "You have a dog," the redhead acknowledged, petting Gizmo behind the ears. "He's cute."
"Why are you here, Jules?" Rachel demanded, not up for small talk. This girl had been treating her like something she'd stepped in for a year now. There's no way this was a simple social call.
Lifting her eyes, Jules looked at Rachel for the first time since she'd arrived. "It's about Liam."
Something twisted in the pit of Rachel's stomach at the mention of her boyfriend's name. She visibly stiffened and her breath caught in her throat.
Gaining composure, Rachel found her voice. "What did he do?" she stammered.
"It's not what he's done." Jules dug hand into her coat pocket. "It's what he's doing." Out she pulled a ziploc bag containing small circular pills.
Rachel's eyes bulged from her head as panic gripped at her. "Are you crazy!" she whisper-yelled, snatching the bag from Jules' hand. "Why would you carry this all the way here?" It was then that she'd realised she'd dropped herself in it.
"You knew!" It wasn't a question.
Rachel sighed to herself for letting it slip past her lips. "Yes," she shot through clenched teeth. Not with malicious intent, but anger and frustration at herself. "I knew." Before Jules could voice her complaints, she spoke up again. "How'd you even find them?"
Jules took an uncharacteristic deep breath, as if readying herself. "Liam has been acting weird," the redhead explained, "so I decided to investigate; I found them in his desk."
