"There's something i wanted to tell you."
"Is that important? You seem anxious." Daniel chuckled, arched his eyebrow, and reached into his coat pocket for something.
Tristan asked, looking at him bewildered, "S-Since when did you vape?" taking him by surprise. "Since when did you started vaping, daniel?""I think it's none of your business?"
Tristan was shocked. His answer comes across as stilted and as though he was unable to articulate it.
"What do you wanna tell me?" Daniel blew the smoke before he turned to Tristan who's already looking at him with his blank expression.
"I've been wanting to tell you this, dan." Tristan stepped forward and gave him a devoted look. Placing the latter in front of him while Daniel keeps vaping.
Daniel asked again, his confused expression giving way to irritated ones as he turned to face Tristan. "What do you want to tell me, Tris?"
"I like you."At first, Daniel remained silent. He exhaled another smoke and hummed while blinking slowly and frequently. Daniel feels certain that this man is making fun of him.
"I am not pranking around."
Daniel scowled and snorted, "You really do love reading my mind, Tristan." Daniel chuckled and exhaled another smoke, asking, "Do you really like me? Some sort of infatuation? Attachment? Or goofing around?"
"You're acting weird.."Daniel rolled his eyes and snapped, "What do you mean acting weird, Tris?" turning his head away.
"I like you- fuck no, i love you Daniel."Daniel then experienced a heart attack. Daniel was certain that he is not gay, but he is also not straight. He's not sure what these feelings that he's been holding in are. He has been holding onto things for so long that he is unable to pinpoint the exact beginning of his feelings.
Fearful that his best buddy, who was also his friend in middle school, might be playing practical jokes on him because she liked him and was in love with him. They were young in those days.
Since he arrived, Daniel has been quietly monitoring Tristan and has been able to maintain his composure. Daniel just blasted some smoke in his vape pen, and Tristan has been avoiding eye contact.
"You're just confused--"Tristan angrily said, "I am not confused or what shit are you possibly phasing off, Daniel." Daniel kept his poker face on and clicked his tongue.
"Or you can't return nor reciprocate those feelings?"
Daniel could now sense the tension, atmosphere, and strain between them.
becoming hazy and strong. Daniel turned to face him and scowled.
"But were both men Tristan!" Daniel yelled at him, distraught because Tristan is the only friend he has and that he doesn't want to go into a romantic relationship with his closest friend.
As Tristan listens to Daniel, tears begin to well up in his eyes.Daniel says again, "We're both m-men," and averts his gaze. Steer clear of Tristan's weeping eyes. "We're both men Tristan. We're not meant for each other and its totally its a sin. A heinous act that i couldn't imagine that we'll commit that shit." Daniel was distraught.
"What are gonna those lunatics gonna say to us? Bunch of Faggots!? Love is for only those stupid people. You're not fucking stupid, Tristan!"
Wiping his tears from his cheeks, Tristan yelled back, "Just fucking tell me that you don't feel the same way then I'll go!" He looks away and sniffles, his voice breaking slowly. "I thought you're my fucking best friend! I thought you accept who i truly am!" he finally says.
Daniel yells at the man in front of him, who is sobbing uncontrollably, "Yes Tristan! I am your fucking best friend! But it doesn't mean it's my obligation to return your feelings because that's not how it works!"
Daniel stares at Tristan, breathes deeply, and says, "I love so much, Tristan." "But my love for you is not the same way as you wanted or expected to be it."
Hearing such comments come from the person he had truly loved for years devastated Tristan's heart. His best friend had rejected him harshly. For anyone, being rejected may be an extremely unpleasant and challenging experience. It may trigger feelings of insecurity, hurt, rage, and melancholy. However, it's critical to keep in mind that rejection does not indicate our value as individuals. It can be hard to take, but it simply implies that the person does not want to date us.
It's critical to respond to rejection with dignity and respect, no matter what happens. It's crucial to be understanding and kind to the other person even if we don't get the response we were hoping for.
Looking up at the sky instead of at Daniel, Tristan said, "So I'll claim that as a rejection." "I've been wanting to tell you this but i just realised that, I've been in love with you since you saved me from those bullies. It feels like my life depends on you. I feel safe and secure whenever you're around.. it feels surreal." He chuckled."alright, let's put this to and end."
"what are you talking about?"
"let's end our friendship.."
Daniel's heart fell at that. He had not anticipated any of this. His best friend contacted him right after he got out of something, and he had no idea this would happen.
"I can't lose you, Tristan.""You just did."
Daniel chuckled, and Tristan gave him a crazed look that said, "How irrational and insensitive are you to end our friendship because i can't return your feelings?" Daniel said angrily, "You're being such a loser."
Daniel laughed and turned to face Tristan. "Ever in your life, had believe such rumours of me that i don't age?" he asked. Daniel flung aside his vape pen as if it cared and couldn't stop smiling. "We've been friends for years, Tristan."
"I can't return your feelings." Twice as quickly and far more sharply, Daniel rejected Tristan for the second time. "If you wanna go, then go. Ending our friendship? That's your choice, its your lose." After that, he leaves the building.
There on the rooftop, devastated and living, was Tristan. He would cry uncontrollably for hours at that place.
It is unethical and disrespectful to force someone to love or like us back since it violates their right to autonomy. It is not fair or healthy to force our own demands on others; everyone has a right to have their own feelings and limits respected. Furthermore, forced love or like is not sincere and does not lay the groundwork for a happy and healthy partnership. In the end, we have to acknowledge that we have no influence over the emotions of others; all we can do is manage our own actions and reactions.
