"Cas I... We can't. I break everything I touch and I can't do that to you." Dean said. And in that moment Castiel's heart shattered. Now there was the regret, the guilt. He could see it in his eyes as the hunter stepped away from him. The burn of rejection stung his eyes as he was gone in one flap of wings. It destroyed him to disappear like that but he couldn't take it. Castiel knew he couldn't go back now. Maybe it was selfish but he didn't want to face Dean right now. So, he went back to heaven. Watching over Dean in secret. Heaven may have been chaotic but it was better than confronting the hunter. Sam had woken up soon after he'd left about a year ago and now the brothers were back to hunting. Castiel ignored his calls from Dean and tried his hardest to keep the man out of his mind. But Dean was always on his mind and he couldn't help it. It pained him to hear Dean scream his name until his voice went hoarse. Really, all he wanted was to run into the man's arms and stay there for as long as he was allowed. Throughout the entire time he'd been gone Dean never once gave up on him. But Dean didn't love him the way Castiel did and that was why he couldn't return. Until one day he was visiting his favorite version of heaven, the heaven of a middle aged man with autism, when he heard a pained version of his name uttered from the hunter's lips. Panic shot through him as he used what little grace he had left to bring him to the source of that voice. What he saw made his blood run cold. Dean was lying on the ground beaten up and bloody, and Sam was nowhere in sight. He rushed to the hunter's side and felt for his pulse. He was still breathing but his pulse was far slower than it should be. Dean's eyes were barely open and he was on the edge of consciousness.

"Hold on Dean I'm going to get you help." Castiel choked out through sudden tears. He was already weak but he didn't know how to drive and couldn't wait for an ambulance, so he used the last bit of power he had to transport them to the hospital. He quickly got the attention of one of the nurses and they put Dean on a stretcher and rushed him to the ER. Things were shouted that the angel didn't understand but he knew it was bad. They were able to get a steady pulse and put him on oxygen in a hospital bed. The good news was that the damage looked worse than it actually was. Dean managed to get off with a few broken ribs and a broken collar bone with a minor concussion. It terrified him to know that if he had ignored Dean's call this time, he could have died. Castiel retrieved the hunter's cell phone and called Sam. The phone rang until he could hear the familiar click of the receiver.

"Dean, where are you?" Sam sounded impatient as if he'd been waiting for Dean to return for some time.

"...Sam this is Castiel."

"Cas? What happened to Dean?" Sam began to sound frantic on the other end.

"I found him beat up and brought him to the hospital." The angel answered.

"Which hospital?" Sam said with a sense of urgency. Castiel told him and Sam got there within the next 20 minutes. Cas was sitting at the edge of Dean's bed when Sam barged in.

"Is he ok?" Sam asked.

"The doctors said he will be ok and should wake up soon." He said.

"Where the hell have you been man? I mean you just disappeared out of the blue and all of a sudden you're back?"

"I have been in heaven attending to some matters." He knew he was lying to Sam but he didn't know if Dean would want his brother to know what had transpired between them. So he didn't tell him the real reason he left.

"Well, I'm glad you're back. I'm sure Dean will be too." For some reason Castiel doubted that.

"Dean was really torn up when you left. He wouldn't stop calling you either." Sam informed him.

"I'm aware. I heard him." Castiel stared at Dean's resting face.

"Then why didn't you come back?" The hunter questioned.
