I could hear the breaking of glass as items fell on the ground and furniture getting knocked over. I kept hidden under the table and dared to not put the table cloth up nor look for he would see me. I could hear my parents fighting with someone in the living room. I tried ignoring the noise but nothing could make the worry and anxiety go away. I cradled myself in my arms and waited. I could hear reloading of a gun and before I knew it, two bodies slammed against the ground. I peeked through a translucent part of the table cloth and the harsh realization of my parents death hit me as silent tears flowed down my cheeks. The horror of it all settled in and all I felt like doing was running up to my parents to see them. Figures ran around the house and continued searching for the very reason they were here - me. I shuddered and kept silent but I couldn't help but continue crying. They continued rummaging through the room in every way possible but not once had they decided to look under the table even though it was an obvious place. After what seemed like an hour, they left. I could've gone out and saw my parents but I knew it would just make it worse. I stayed under the table and somehow fell into a restless sleep.
11 Years Later.....
The alarm buzzed as I searched for the flashing red light in the sunlit room and switched it off. I grabbed the pillow, shoved it on my head and groaned. Another day with my mean, creepy and strange aunt.
How I wished I had actual parents - ones that were still alive and cared for me, but more importantly, parents I knew. After all, I was only five when they died and any extra information that I once knew about how my parents died and what they were like was, unfortunately, long forgotten.
I reluctantly pulled the warm blankets off my body and shivered. It was mid-Autumn which meant it was quite cold where I lived at the moment. I stood up and brushed my feet on the soft carpet. I opened my cupboard and decided to wear skinny jeans, converse shoes, and a red and white ruffled top.
I opened my bedroom door and rushed down the long narrow steps that went downstairs, knowing my aunt would get mad at me if I was late getting up and ready. I went inside the pantry cupboard, got out coco pops, milk from the fridge, a bowl and a spoon. I added the cereal and milk in the bowl and placed the spoon inside and went to sit at the table.
After a minute or so of eating, aunt Josephine's door opened and she came out of her room. Her hair was midnight black in color and appeared silky and incredibly straight. She always looked beautiful, even when she gets up. Which is surprising because she doesn't even use makeup or a hair straightener. I look at her with fascination. She wore knee-high boots, a short purple skirt and a blood red tank top. To me, this always seemed like an odd combination and in a way; she was naturally intimidating, as if she had many deadly secrets. There was something definitely different about her. As if she wasn't human.
I shook the thought away and finished eating my cereal and placed it on the sink.
"Adele", she said in a creepy voice. "I have signed you up at a new school. You will be going to this school from now on".
"But I was just starting to know people-" I stuttered in shock.
"No buts. Trust me, you'll like this school", a smile growing on her face.
I kept quiet but to be honest, I didn't want to leave schools and by the way she was talking about it..... it sounded as if it was going to be horrible school and that creepy smile gave me the creeps.
I nodded. It was no use arguing with her. I had tried it once before and it didn't end up well. I just hoped this school wouldn't turn out a disaster like some of the previous ones I've been to.
I ran upstairs, grabbed my bag and slipped the strap over one of my shoulders.
"I'm ready to go".
"Oh, almost forgot to tell you. It's only a five minutes from here to the school so you are going to have to walk from now on", she added in a cold voice.
"I don't know where it is", I replied.
My aunt walked over to the office desk and picked up a map rolled up with a rubber band and threw it to me. I caught it and slipped the rubber band off the map and into my jean pocket. I then stretched the map in my hands and followed it all the way to the school.
I turned a corner at the end of a street and a road away from me stood the school. It was a massive building that went three or four stories high. It looked like any other high school building, but just like my aunt, it was strange in a way - almost creepy. The building was a mixture of black, purple, red and a high black gate surrounded the school except the entrance. The garden in front of the school was covered in red, orange, yellow leaves and the trees were a very dark brown, almost black and bared no leaves, just branches. A thing that surprised me though, was that there were no banners or signs saying what school it was or its name. Students aged sixteen and up walked into the building, some chatting and some rushed. A bell rang throughout the school. I quickly placed the rubber band back on the rolled-up map, shoved it into my bag and ran across the road and into the school building.
A long corridor started from the entrance and led almost all the way to the end of the building. The whole walls of the corridors contained lockers - all of which had name tags on them. I followed everyone else down the long corridor until I came to a locker with the name tag; Adele Lockhart
I opened it up and peered inside but it was all empty except a note stuck to the locker door with blu-tack. I gently took it off and read its fancy cursive writing:
