"DSP Sir has been tirading me with calls and departmental enquiry emails...Karishma Singh, any updates?"
Inspector Amar Vidrohi had not once sat down since the encounter with the mob. Though it had been not even thirty minutes, it felt forever in the police station.
"Yes Sir. Pushpa ji just called me and informed that Santu has been put under observation. There is a possibility she might have to undergo another surgery...And Chita, he has been put to sleep with the help of medicines. He has underwent severe stress and strain in a short time, that's what the doctors have to say."
"Ok Karishma Singh. Now please come here and help me with the emails."
Karishma got to work immediately. She had been trying hard to keep her composure from breaking all that time and put on an overly stoic expression for that purpose. It felt like her whole family was coming apart, Santu and Chita hospitalised and Maddam Sir in a shocker stage which was scaring her. She idolised Haseena Mallik for her calmness and seeing her in such a morose, helpless state, made her feel so lost.
Karishma pulled out her phone and let her finger hover over the much frequently dialled contact but she put it away after sometime. As much as she yearned for Pushpa ji's comforting words and warm hugs now, it was not the right time. There was a hell lot of things to be done.
She turned back to the file on her hand, furrowing her eyebrows in a feeble attempt to push away the headache intensifying evert second. Flipping a page, she was scanning the contents when her focus was disturbed by a loud crash of glass breaking.
It came from Amar's cabin and Karishma wasted no second to reach. Behind her the others at the thana too followed.
"SIR" Diwan ji screamed rushing to be next to the man who was more of a son and younger brother to him.
He squeezed the angry man's shoulder, looking at the broken glass shards on the ground and the cracked television screen which was playing out a news report blaring out the same 'sensational' news of the day- Hasina Mallik was a liar and a traitor to her team.
"Billo shut this cursed thing" Karishma ordered, fuming.
"No Billu don't"
Everybody's heads turned around instantly at the feeble voice which they were had seldom heard without its typical composure and gentle authority.
