mae is in cora's room, getting ready to leave and go to her dad's birthday party. she's brushing her hair and rambling about something random while cora sits on her bed, scrolling through her phone, only half listening to her friend's words.
honestly, this whole situation is beginning to piss mae off. her dad is a great father and he wants the best for his kids. but this leads to him being very strict and putting tons of pressure onto his daughters.
when mae and alice were in highschool, alice would effortlessly get straight As. while mae struggled to pass her classes. due to this, their dad always favored alice over mae. and he made no attempt to hide the favoritism.
it's now been about six months since mae has last seen her father -- she's been avoiding him. so she's trying her best to look presentable and practice the fake smile she's going to wear all evening.
mae's telling cora all of this while she fights her hair to stay the way she wants it. but it's not doing what she wants. the strands are flying all over the place and she's tempted to shave the shit off.
then, her timer goes off.
it's time to leave.
time for cora to drive mae to the home that she grew up in. the one where she had a happy family -- before alice betrayed her. before her mom left her. before her dad neglected her.
suddenly, mae realizes that everyone in her life has left her. abandoned her. everyone except for cora, matt, and nick.
shit, even chris left her.
mae insantly feels the urge to cry again. but then her eyeliner would run down her cheeks. and she can't show up to the party looking like she's been bawling her eyes out for the past few hours.
"are you ready?" cora asks her. hesitantly, mae nods.
