Midnight

My life torn apart. There was nothing left for me. The night held my cries.

Aubrey always loved the nighttime. The feeling of thrill mixed with fear that came with living on the edge was just about the only thing that cut through the vacuity of Greenwood, even if it was supposedly dangerous, that never really mattered to her. Now, though, the rush had shrunk away, leaving just the gripping terror that usually came and went with it. She would have done anything to make tonight like any other night, peaceful and quiet, spent watching the stars twinkle against the blackish-purple sky, but there was no reversing anything, no stopping it all...the joy was gone, and there she was...slipping off the edge.

She felt a stinging pain in her eyes as she thought about everything, and more tears came, dribbling down her freckled cheeks all the way down to her chin where they .

She forced her face deeper into the clump of blanket in her lap and felt herself sobbing like a baby as her mind flashed with thoughts about what had happened. She tried to hide from it all, but there was no escaping or forgetting or hiding, just the echoes of screams.

She heard it all again in her mind, screaming and yelling and gunshots...then snarls. Scratchy, hideous yelps at first, then...loud, bellowing rasps and growls, and...more screaming.

Later...the worst of it came. Aubrey hadn't heard it at first, but when she listened closer over the sounds of raging fire, she heard it. The sound of the creatures feeding was the final nail in the coffin, where Aubrey felt her fear grow into full-blown horror. Then, for the first time all night, she felt a twinge of defeated sadness, which quickly overwhelmed the terror, leaving her a cold mess curled up on her bedroom floor.

There was no hope. She didn't want there to be...without her parents...she just hoped they would find her soon and she could forget the screams for good.
