A kind Hufflepuff fourth year found Maggie on the lavatory floor, several minutes after Lucretia had made her triumphant exit.

The next hour passed in a blur.

Eventually, Maggie found herself lying on a Hospital Wing bed, with the white sheets pulled up to her chest and Healing Salve-infused bandages over her face.

Madam Pomfrey had mercifully administered a drop of Drowsy Draught to send her off to a soothing sleep.

Its effects had already started to take place by the time Maggie heard a familiar, languid voice from the foot of her bed.

The draught induced such a grogginess she could not open her eyes against the haze of sleepiness, yet she heard her father clearly.

"Who......?" Severus demanded.

"I believe your daughter is the only one who knows her attacker's identity at this point, Severus." Madam Pomfrey replied with a frown in her voice, "We can examine her memories for evidence, of course, if she refuses to divulge that information."

"Do you dare doubt her, Madam Pomfrey?" Severus snapped in a cutting hiss.

"No, sir!" Madam Pomfrey exclaimed, "Not at all!"

While Maggie dozed, Severus silently sat down in the chair by her bedside and scowled at his eldest child.

His only daughter, his precious little girl.

Harriet had been the one who had given birth, but the arrival of three new children had set his paternal, alpha instincts on edge.

Protect, avenge, comfort.......the primal commands gnawed at him as he gazed at his little one's bandaged face.

"What shall we do, Severus?" Madam Pomfrey sighed, "May I suggest you speak with McGonagall about the matter? As you know, punishing a student's behaviour is regrettably not within my scope of practice."

Severus said nothing as he sat quietly next to Maggie.

It pained him to realize he would have to leave his child there in the Hospital Wing soon enough.

Harriet was in no condition to travel.

Moving Maggie had the sinister potential to jostle her and increase her pain.

Besides, Severus's discussion with McGonagall would happen that night.

He narrowed his dark eyes as he gazed at Maggie.

McGonagall would listen, of that he was certain.

Hogwarts' current headmistress tolerated no cruelty.

While Severus spent a few minutes sitting with Maggie, Madam Pomfrey tended her evening duties to give parent and child some privacy.

She looked up as another knock fell on the infirmary's heavy doors.

Madam Pomfrey frowned as she walked over and opened the doors.

She sighed as she came face-to-face with Scorpius Malfoy for the tenth time since Maggie had been placed in her care that evening.

"Mr. Malfoy........." Madam Pomfrey huffed tiredly, "I beg you to listen......"

"I.....I just want to see her!" Scorpius insisted with wide eyes, ".....To know that she's alright! What happened to her?! Is she ill?! Is she injured?! Will she.....Will she.......?!"
