After a week back at Hogwarts that had not been improving, with Hagrid being put on probation and Harry's bad mood adding to the escape of the Death Eaters, Daphne was relieved to find that the following weeks were calmer. However, during these three weeks, torn between their increasingly heavy workload as the date of the O.W.L. approached, Quidditch training sessions and her visits to the Aufera, she had not managed to get closer to Harry.

Sitting on one of the couches in the common room, surrounded by her friends, Daphne leafed through a book illustrating magical animals from South America while thinking about how to develop their relationship.

"Adalinda, can you help me with my History of Magic homework this Saturday? I keep getting confused with the succession of the kings of the Giants, their names all sound the same, it's a real headache," Millicent complained.

"Oh, I'm sorry Milly, but this Saturday I'll be spending the day with Blaise in Hogsmeade."

"Of course, it's Valentine's Day this weekend, I completely forgot !"

"Not surprising when no one would think to invite you," commented Pansy without even taking her eyes off her stupid magazine.

"So, did Draco finally ask you out, Pansy?" Daphne asked to put her in her place.

She knew perfectly well that it was not the case since otherwise she would have let them know. Nevertheless, Daphne was fed up with the way Pansy took it out on Millicent when she was in a bad mood.

"No, not yet. But it won't be long, I'll go and ask him myself if I have to. Draco likes girls who take initiative," Pansy replied with a little defiant smile aimed at Daphne.

Having finished her book, the young Greengrass decided to go and put it back in her dormitory when she ran into her little sister, looking out through the window separating them from the depths of the black lake.

"So, how's the giant squid doing ?"

Her question had the effect of making Astoria laugh as she turned towards her older sister.

"How are you doing, little Pixie ? Is the return to classes going well ?"

"Yes, it's fine," she replied without much enthusiasm.

"Is there something you want to talk to me about ?"

Astoria looked a little sad.

"Ackley asked Helia Jones to accompany him to Hogsmeade and I don't really want to go alone."

"What about your friends ?"

"Irene mysteriously claimed to have something else to do, but I suspect a boy asked her to spend the day with him in the village. And the others say they're too busy to go out."

"Hey, why don't you come with me ? We could spend the day together ! How about a Valentine's Day between sisters ? You're my favorite person after all !"

"Oh yes, that would be great ! We could restock our candy supplies at Honeydukes."

"Good idea," said Daphne, delighted to see Astoria's pretty smile light up her face again.

On Thursday morning, Daphne didn't have classes during the first half of the day, so she allowed herself to do what she rarely did : enjoy a full night's sleep. However, she had taken a little too much advantage of it and was now late for breakfast. Finally arriving in the Great Hall, Daphne noticed that only a few students, including her friends, were still finishing their toast. She'd better hurry if she wanted to eat something before the start of her day. In her rush to get to the Slytherin table, her shoulder collided with that of another Slytherin.
