"He truly hates me". The realization came crashing down on Kiara as she sat motionless across the couch. The humiliation she faced today cemented this fact. No matter how she told herself that he'll know the truth, that everything would be back to normal, her resolve was weakening day by day.
"How could he do this to us?" Kiara swallowed back unwanted tears as they threatened to seep through. It had been the same for months. Every morning she opened her eyes the first thing she was reminded of was all that she had lost. Followed by the excruciating pain of heartbreak and betrayal. The dingy apartment which she was surrounded by seem to no doubt taunt her of this reality.
As her eyes close in misery, she gave way to it all. Built up by a sniffle, the flood of tears started, heart wrenching sobs echoing across the room. She felt so broken, when last did she shower. Would it even matter? It's not like she had anything to live for.At twenty-five she felt that her life was at a standstill. She'd been used and discarded, leaving behind a hollow shell of the vibrant young woman she once was.
But how could it have gone so far. More importantly could she carry on whatever this she was living.Rising her back from off the couch, Kiara slumped down into herself. Her mind flashing back to her once perfect life where she was loved by him and placed so much effort in ensuring that he too felt the same way. The life that was so abruptly taken from her by the very last person she expected.
Their impending divorce was becoming one of the worst things of her life. The first time they met to discuss it, she felt that she was sitting in a room across a stranger. Not the man that she had grew to love, who vowed to never hurt her. Talk about a change in personality.
The things he had said in that meeting. Kiara mind flash to when he called her a whore. It felt like a slap to her face. This couldn't be the man that she loved. Overnight he became a monster, ready to destroy all that she was. This wasn't real.
But this was no dream, as she was rudely awakened by the memory of him throwing her out of the house they once shared with nothing but the clothes on her back. Kiara felt ashamed each time she remembered, all the insults he hurled her way as he threw her stuff into her face. Calling her a whore, gold-digger. His veins were bulging through his face that night, she was so scared, never seeing him this angry.
She was so stumped and disillusioned, it was hard to fathom that this was her Nicky. Only she could have call him that. He was the one everyone in town feared. Fondly remembering, when they just met Kiara smiled. She was just coming from the coffee shop, when a group of teens felt the need to 'put her in her place'. She was the only black girl in town, and living in a small community at the outset of Texas didn't put her in a much better situation. She'd always wondered why her parents felt the need to move all the way out here, being the only black couple for miles around.
Hell, she even wondered why she didn't leave, seeing that after her parents died it was just her, and it wasn't like that was doing her any favour in this god forsaken place.
But Nicky was different from the rest, he had came to her rescue that morning. Putting the fear of god in those boys. She remembered smiling as they walked away tail tucked behind them in shame. That was the beginning of their romance, he had asked her out on a date after that. Not being so forthcoming of his advances Kiara had cautiously agreed to it. Afterall this was her first time dating a white man. Her mom had always cautioned her of them, especially living where she was, she was all too familiar with how they saw her.
Her Nicky was different though, after months of dating he had asked her to marry him. She felt as if she was on air that day, nothing could have gotten her down, not even Terri and her goons, three dumb blondes who made it their lives mission to deride her to no end since high school. She didn't even know why, they were all gorgeous, but just as her Mama use to say "people did crazy things for reason we would never know".
Their wedding was something else and one of the happiest days of her life, Nick sought to spare no expenses. This was where Kiara had found out how truly wealthy her soon to be husband was. She felt like a princess that day, surrounded by Nick's close friends and family, they had all made her felt welcome.
The years spent after that was complete bliss, they had made passionate love each night, and in the day she was free to pursue her love of baking while Nick would go into office. She was planning to open her own bakery in town, but placed that on hold since they talked of starting their family soon.
Kiara had always dreamt of being a mother and could not wait for that day to come. Nick for all she knew was thrilled at that idea. He would fondly stroke her stomach at night, whispering sweet nothings of how he envisioned seeing her barefoot and pregnant walking around their house. But, as recent events would have it in her life, everything now seemed a far away distant dream.
Grudgingly remembering the events of today that led to the crashing realization of his hate, she laughed bitterly, the sound laced with anguish. Oh, what a fool she had been, Kiara thought, she couldn't even believe it herself. She had sunk so low in her desperation she started hanging around their old house, hoping to catch a glimpse of the man she once knew, just to plead her case. But her plan failed miserably, ousted even before a minute had pass. The humiliation was horrifying. Having being carted off into handcuffs while the man you loved stared at you in disgust and pity. She was disgusted even with her own self. Maybe she was pathetic as he had said.
