A Field Of Flowers

Our vice principal, Ms. Kampel, whispered something in Alek's ear before turning to the class.
"I hope you all know how to treat him. One word from anyone about him being badly treated, and you all will be punished. Is that clear?" She asked, her voice snapping me out of my trance. We all nodded.

She turned to Mrs. Frankel and said something under her breath that I couldn't quite make out. Mrs. Frankel nodded and ushered Ms. Kampel out the door, shutting it with a small sigh of relief. I scanned the room for any other empty seat other than the one next to me, but there were no other seats. He walked over and plopped down next to me, clearly not happy to be here.
"Heil Hitler," I muttered to him, earning the mandatory response back.

As Mrs. Frankel droned on with the arithmatic lesson, I started staring out the window. Usually I paid attention in school, but between Glenn and the lesson boring me to death, I had a daydream.

I stood in a field of flowers. Turning to my right, I saw Glenn standing there.
"Heil Hitler," I said, raising my arm in a salute. He slapped my arm down.
"You don't need to do that here. Hitler's dead." Glenn stated, a look of glee on his face. I could feel my face break into a smile, but why? Hitler was doing wonders for Germany, he was making it a better place, making our race superior. We all loved Hitler.

Didn't we?

"Ms. Westfeld!" A voice snapped me out of my daydream and back into reality. Mrs. Frankel shook her head and walked over to her desk, making a quick note in her notebook before turning to address the class.

"Partner up with the person next to you. I want you and your partner to work on a project. I will pass out the instructions now. Get with your partners please."

Her voice rang out through the classroom. I turned to Alek, as the other people surrounding me had quickly turned away. Grabbing a sheet of instructions, I read them to Alek.

"You and a partner will be working on a project on the rankings of the Nazi party. You will be graded both individually and together. Remember, this is a very important grade and is due in two weeks and will be worked on outside of schook."

I sighed.

"What?" He asked, his voice deeper than I expected. I shook my head, looking over him. He had brown hair that he styled in an odd way, high cheekbones, and a lean, muscular body that made me wonder where he was from.

He shrugged and looked over the directions before diverting his attention to me.

"Don't worry. I'm not stupid and I won't make you do all the work." Alek said, earning surprise from me when my face broke into a small smile. The last time I smiled must have been before Glenn's death. He chuckled and tucked a piece of hair behind his ear in that weird style. I watched him silently for a moment before breaking the silence between us, noticing how all the other pairs were talking.

"So, where do you want to work......? Your house or mine?" I asked him. He seemed startled almost before answering quickly.

"Yours." He mumbled. I nodded and scribbled my address down on a scrap of paper and sliding it to him. He tucked it into his pocket and leaned back in his chair. I raised an eyebrow at him, glancing around at everyone else.

"Come over around 5 tonight?" I asked. He nodded briefly before looking around.

"Hey, can you show me around after school? I might get lost otherwise." Alek asked. I did something I never thought I'd do.

I nodded.
