*ALEK'S POV*
I looked over at the girl sitting next to me. Rosa, I think her name was. Her brown hair fell over her face as she started working on the work Mrs. Frankel had given us. I tried to figure out the way she held herself, as I hadn't seen anyone quite like her in a while. I shook my head and concentrated on the work in front of me.
Rosa pointed out the last classroom before leading me out the door and turning onto a sidewalk. I didn't know whether or not to follow her so I ran a hand through my hair and cleared my throat.
She turned around and bit her lip; I think she was blushing a bit as well.
"Oh. Um, you can head home now I guess. I'll see you later?" She mumbled before heading off. I flashed her a small smile, even though she couldn't see me, and started walking back to my house. A flower on the side of the road caught my eye. I hadn't seen that type of flower since I left my old home after Hitler started collecting Jews.
A quick knock on the door jolted me out of the sleep I was about to fall into. My father let whoever was at the door in and seemed to have an argument with the person before letting them into our living room. It was the butcher; although we were good friends with him, I never expected him to be in our home. He wrung his hands together as if he was about to tell us someone had died.
His mouth opened and I would never forget the words that were about to come out of it.
"You and your family need to leave immediately. The Wordens must cease to exist. You must move to another part of the country. Take up new identities. Hitler has begun taking Jews. You must move fast."
My father stood there in shock for a moment. Everyone was still. You could have heard a pin drop. The worry was thick in the air. My mom had dropped her knitting and my dad had seemed to have frozen. He shook his head for a moment before taking the butcher into another room, I assumed to make plans for our departure.
I still remembered the day I became Alek Hugh. But I never stopped being Jack Worden.

I knocked on the door to Rosa's house, worried that maybe someone would recognize me. That maybe I would get caught. I pushed those thoughts out of my head. Jack Worden was dead, I left him behind.
The door swung open to reveal Rosa standing there. She gave me a grim smile, not bothering with a salute, before inviting me in. We began working and only took a few breaks to eat.
We had finished what we wanted to get done for the day, and we were chatting about something random when she asked, out of the blue,
"So why did you move here?"
I almost choked, as I wasn't expecting that. However, I managed to cover up my 'choking' misshap and answer quickly, using the rehearsed answer.
"My dad's job needed him here. So here I am." I said quietly, hoping she didn't sense the real reason I was here.
She nodded and leaned back, closing her eyes for a moment. I took this time to truly take a look at her.
Her brown hair cascaded down her arms, out of the braid it was in during school, wavy and loose. It complimented her unusually pale skin and blue eyes. And her eyes, when they were open were beautiful. It was almost as if they had captured the ocean perfectly, not to be cliché or anything. She seemed to be a bit skinny, but it didn't look like she used to be that way.
Rosa's eyes fluttered open and I quickly looked away, focusing on my hands.
"You should get going," she says softly, looking at me with those eyes. I nod. Before pushing myself up, I finally figured out how she held herself.
Rosa held herself like she lost something important. Her eyes seemed to hold a sense of loss as well.
I said a quick goodbye to her before heading back home.
But the only reason I knew what the look in her eyes was, was because I had the same one.
