Sarah was there the next morning to wake me up. "Wha...what time is it?" I asked her groggily, slowly sitting up. "Just past 8, dear," she replied, "I was supposed to wake you up earlier, but you was sound asleep. Sure looked like you needed it, so I gave you an extra hour." I rubbed my eyes as my foggy brain tried to process all of this information.

All of a sudden, the previous night's events flooded back to mind. Panicked, I immediately turned to Penelope. My hands reached for hers as my eyes darted across various screens. I didn't understand what any of them meant, except one. I was sure it was attached to her heart. I could feel it beat at the same time the lines moved on the screen. I knew that one could not be allowed to go flat.

"So," Sarah interrupted these thoughts, " I have good news and bad news, darlin. Which one are ya picking?"

I thought for a moment. "Bad," I replied. Best to get it over with.

"Well," Sarah deliberated, "The bad news is that Penelope here is in a pretty serious coma. We have no idea when she will wake up. Of course, we have treatments we could give her that'd wake her right up they cost a lot of cash. Your insurance won't cover it."
"And the good news?" I sighed. I was exhausted. "The good news is that I have faith she'll wake up," Sarah smiled, "you'll get your girl back yet." She walked over to the other side of the room, where a couch that had not previously been there now sat. "I had them bring up a couch for you," she explained, "its a pullout bed. Now you just go on an sleep. Stayin awake ain't gonna help her."
Sarah guided me over to the bed and helped me lay down.
"I'll be back in a while to check her vitals again." And with those words, I fell asleep, barely managing to catch the brokenhearted look on her face as she left the room.
