Mikey and Pete sat on a bridge, staring out at the water below them. Pete was shivering but otherwise content with where they were.

Both of their hearts were pounding.

"Amazing New Mexico sunset, hm?" Pete asked.

"Yeah." He nodded, looking over at him. "Today was fun. You look cold. Take this." Mikey draped his jacket over his shoulders.

"Thanks." Pete smiled gratefully and blushed, looking down at his feet dangling over the edge. "The waterpark was really fun."

"Uh-huh," he agreed, but he was focused on Pete's eyes. "I liked our drive."

"Yeah, I did too."

Suddenly, Mikey slipped his hand into Pete's and intertwined their fingers. "I've missed you."

"Yeah, me too..." He frowned, staring at the sky. "This long-distance thing really sucks."

"Uh-huh," he agreed, wondering to himself when the right time would be.

"Y'know what else sucks?"

"What?"

"We can't sit on this bridge the whole night." Pete laughed, leaning his head on Mikey's shoulder. "We have to celebrate the Fourth of July."

"Well we can ignore everyone at the party."

"Sounds good to me."

Mikey messed up Pete's hair and kissed his forehead. "I love you."

"I love you too."

"H-Hey," he said, shakily, feeling his hands tremble.

Pete perked up. "What's wrong..."

"Pete, I- I love you so much. And after three years of being with you I know you're the one."

His breath got caught in his throat. "Oh."

"A-And..." He stuttered. "A-And I think you're perfect. I love you. And... shit, I'm... I had this whole thing planned out in my head but I'm so fucking nervous."

Pete laughed. "I don't need a speech, Mikes. I just need you."

He smiled, reaching into a pocket and taking out a ring box. "Will you marry me, Pete?"

He was speechless. He nodded, first and foremost, before crying into Mikey's shoulder as they hugged. "Yes," he sobbed.

Mikey opened the black velvet box and tried to slide the ring onto his finger, but his hand was shaking so badly that he dropped it into the water below them.

Pete stared at him and laughed instinctively.

"Holy fuck," he whispered under his breath, before nervously running his hands through his hair. His stomach flipped over and he stared up at Pete with wide eyes. "I am so sorry."

"No, no, Mikey, it's okay," he soothed, wrapping his arms around his waist.

"I'm so sorry!" He blushed.

"No, it's good! It's fine!"

He frowned angrily. "Jesus Christ, how did I manage–" He took his sweatshirt and glasses off, leaving them where he sat.

"No, don't you dare–"

"I'm going!" Mikey jumped into the water, creating a loud splash. He treaded water and adjusted his hair so it was out of his eyes.

"Then I am too!" Pete dove in, making sure Mikey was a safe distance away from him.

They both stared at each other and burst into wild laughter.

"We're such idiots."

"I'm gonna look."

"You're never gonna find it," he panted. "You're gonna get sick, it's cold."

"Pete, I didn't jump in here for nothing." He laughed.

"I don't need it, which is what I was trying to tell you."

"I'm gonna go look."

Mikey went underwater and searched through the murk for some sort of shiny object, but his eyes were stinging. This water wasn't the cleanest. He popped back up on the surface. Pete fixed his hair and shook his head. "Mikes..."

He laughed. "I cannot believe I just managed to do that... I dropped the stupid ring."

"You're cute. You were so nervous! Did you think I was going to say no?"
"I-I dunno." He shrugged. His whole body was shaking. "I-I was just worried."

Pete kissed him softly, running his fingers through his hair. "You're my fiancé now."

"Yes. Yes I am." He smiled against his lips and wrapped his arms around his waist. "And boy, am I going to show you off tonight."

"I'm totally okay with that."

"And we can piss off my homophobic relatives."

"Hell yeah!" Pete cried, laughing. They kissed again. "And you can take me to your room and we can celebrate," he said, softly.

"Mm-hmm," he hummed. "Hey..."

"Yeah?"

"D-D'ya wanna move in together? Y'know, now that we're like, engaged?"

Pete stared at him. Was this real? Butterflies erupted in his stomach as he nodded. "Of course!"

"Great."

"We'll figure out the logistics later."

Mikey stared at him and laughed for a long time. He was so happy, he couldn't contain it any longer.

Pete laughed too, pushing his wet bangs out of his eyes. "We gotta get out of this lake."

"Yeah..."

Shivering, they clung to each other as they put on their dry clothes. They both sat in silence. Mikey giggled suddenly, feeling his heart flutter.

Pete started laughing too. He leaned back so he was lying down and stared at the orange sky above them.

"I love, love, love you, Mikes."

"I love, love, love, love, love you too, Petey."

"God, I'd love to just be alone with you for the rest of my life and kiss you and hear you talk and look at your eyes," he ranted. "And touch your hair and smell that familiar scent of your laundry, and..."

Mikey smiled and looked down at him. "You can do that now."

"Every moment with you is literally, like... like a gift."

"You're going to make me cry," he said, choking up.

Pete frowned. "Don't cry, please."

He lied down next to him. "I won't, Petey," he said quietly.
