It was the first day of school at Ador Elementary, and nine-year-old Minji was feeling nervous. She was starting fourth grade, and everything felt new and unfamiliar. As she walked into the classroom, she saw a girl sitting at the desk beside her. She had long brown hair and big brown eyes, and Minji felt a flutter in her stomach when she saw her.

"Hi, I'm Minji," she said, introducing herself.

The girl looked up and smiled. "Hi, I'm Haerin."

And with that, a friendship was born.

Over the next few weeks, Minji and Haerin became inseparable. They sat next to each other in class, played together at recess, and even walked home from school together. Minji loved everything about Haerin - her laugh, her sense of humor, and the way she always seemed to know precisely what she was thinking.

One day, as they were walking home from school, Minji gathered the courage to ask Haerin a question that had been on her mind for a while.

"Haerin, do you want to be my girlfriend?"

Haerin looked up at her, surprised. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, do you want to be my girlfriend? Like, you know, we could hold hands and stuff?"

Haerin thought about it for a moment. "I don't know, Minji. I mean, we're just kids. What does being a girlfriend even mean?"

Minji didn't know how to answer that. All she knew was that she liked Haerin more than anyone else in the world, and she wanted to be close to her.

"I don't know what it means," she said. "But I know I like you and want to be with you."

Haerin smiled. "Okay, Minji. We can be girlfriends."

And with that, Minji felt like the happiest kid in the world.

Over the next few weeks, Minji and Haerin spent every moment together. They held hands during recess, passed notes in class, and even shared their snacks at lunch. They were so happy that they didn't even notice the other kids whispering and giggling behind their backs.

But then, one day, everything changed.

As Minji and Haerom were walking home from school, they heard a group of older kids laughing and shouting in the distance. As they got closer, they saw that the kids were making fun of them.

"Look at those two lovebirds!" one of the kids shouted. "They think they're so cool, but they're just a bunch of babies!"

Minji and Haerin felt their faces grow hot with embarrassment. They didn't know what to do or say. They just wanted the other kids to stop making fun of them.

After that day, things were different between Minji and Haerin. They still sat next to each other in class and played together at recess, but they didn't hold hands or share their snacks anymore. It was like they were afraid of what the other kids would say if they saw them together.

One day, as they were walking home from school, Haerin turned to Minji with tears in her eyes.

"I don't want to be your girlfriend anymore," she said.

"Why not?" Minji asked, feeling a lump form in her throat.

"Because it's too hard," Haerin said. "I don't like it when the other kids make fun of us. I just want us to be friends."
