I walked up the large staircase and down the hallway to my sister's room.
"Josephine? Are you in there?" I knocked on the door. I watched as she opened the door. Her red and black hair matched mine but it was longer and pulled back into two braids. She always wore a dress the was made of red and black fabrics
"I have some bad news." I said looking down at the floor.
"What is it?" She said quietly with a worried tone in her voice.
"It's mom. She's not coming back after this fight. So if you want to see her I would go now." I continued to stare at the floor waiting for her response
"I'll be here for you if you need me. You know that right?" I said as I looked into her eyes. Before hugging her, patting her on the head. I turned and walked away.I then made my way to my youngest sister's room Antoinette. I opened the door to her room that had ropes swinging down from the ceiling and circus equipment colored in many shades of red and blue.
I quickly wiped the tears from my eyes before she jumped down from the ceiling and landed in front of me. Her pigtails were tied with black ribbons. She always carried a mask that our mother gave her around. It was back and had horns molded onto it.
She used it to perform with the circus. Our dad sold her to them a while ago but she never seemed to mind. She loves doing that job and entertaining everyone. She always comes home and tells me about all of the little kids that talk to her after the shows who say that they want to be like her. It makes me smile knowing that she's doing what she loves.
"Hey mom wants to see you before she leaves. I don't think she's going to come back but we can only hope." She stayed silent for a moment just staring before tears began to gather in her red eyes. I hugged her for a moment then picked her up and held her.
"I'm sure she will come visit. Don't cry, I'm right here." I said as I held her trying to bring at least a little comfort to her. I hated it when she cried. I'm her older brother. I have to protect her at all costs, but when she cries I feel like I've failed at that job. So whenever I can I always try to help calm her down.
"Don't worry antoinette. If mom doesn't come back I won't let dad hurt you." I hugged her close and set her down. I watched as she slowly made her way down the stairs to say goodbye to our mother. I guess I should do the same. I turned around and followed behind my sister.
I walked outside to the main courtyard to see my father sulking and my sisters hugging my mom. I kept my distance not wanting to show emotions in front of my father. He hates it when I take my mothers side. So it's best I keep my distance and stay silent for now.
"Mother please, can't you and father please try and talk it out? It doesn't have to be this way!" Josephine said between tears while hugging mother tightly.
"Honey I'm sorry, but I can't deal with your father any longer. And I wish I could take you guys with me but you're better to stay here. Away from my family." My mothers words brought a few tears to my eyes but I quickly wiped them away as my father looked in my direction.
"But he might hurt us as well. Maybe even worse! Then what!?" Josephine's voice changed slightly to anger from those words.
"I'm really sorry but my family isn't much safer. Your father is way better than mine ever will be. But I promise that I'll come back for you guys." My mother then reached into her purse and pulled out a packet of seeds. She handed some to me and my sister josephine.
"If you ever miss me, grow these flowers and keep them close." She then turned to Antoinette.
"And you my sweet little girl, you keep that mask for as long as you want. It would bring me so much joy to know you hold it with you while I'm gone."
She then hugged all three of us and began to walk away.
We stood there watching mother walk away. Father was unphased by all that was happening, even though his wife just left him. Antoinette started to tear up again as I hugged her close. I looked over by father just as Josephine ran up to father and pushed him hard against the wall.
"I hate you! If it wasn't for you mother would still be here if you didn't act like the bitch you are! Go rot in god damn hell father. I just hate seeing your face in front of me." She yelled with anger and in tears as I covered Antoinette's ears so she didn't hear Josephine yell at father.
He looked like he didn't care whatsoever. I watched as Josephine ran inside crying and we all heard her shut her door loudly.
