It's a cool evening when Iruka Umino finds himself in a crowded bar. Winter has just ended, landing them on a chilly and rainy spring night.
He's sitting on the edge of a large booth, surrounded by Naruto, Shikamaru, Sakura, and Kakashi. Admittedly, the middle of a bar isn't where he normally finds himself on the average Monday night, but with Naruto's wedding coming up, he's been pulled to all sorts of unusual places at the worst of times for the sake of helping plan the event. After talking to the barkeep about scheduling alcohol catering for the wedding, Naruto insisted on everyone joining him at a booth to grab a drink and catch up.
Iruka loves Naruto like a son- that much is true. Unfortunately, no amount of love will ever make a loud, hot bar Iruka's ideal environment. He is sweaty and uncomfortable, sitting with none other than Kakashi Hatake to his right. On his left is the exit of the booth, which looks increasingly tempting as he's resigned to silence by the fact that everyone present (minus Kakashi) is at least a decade younger than him. Everyone else is occupied in excited conversation about the wedding anyway, aside from Kakashi, who seems to be in his own little world.
Talking to the copy ninja is just as tempting as the booth's exit, but Iruka doesn't dare initiate. Kakashi looks like he's spaced out, sipping on water and tapping his scarred fingers against the wooden table. The single charcoal eye that's not covered by his village headband is trained on the wall across from him, which is right behind Shikamaru's head.
Iruka forces his gaze to land on the table before Kakashi can catch him staring. A loud rock song plays on the radio as Shikamaru, saying something about having to get back home to Temari, slips out of the booth and walks out of the bar.
Naruto and Sakura talk so loudly that Iruka can barely hear the music and the background noise of the other bar patrons' chatter over their voices. However, Kakashi's voice, low and melodic and a little too close to Iruka's ear, manages to cut through it.
"These kids... They've changed so much, but sometimes it feels like they haven't changed at all," Kakashi says. Iruka wonders if the Jonin is talking to himself until he looks over to see Kakashi's one visible eye expectantly running over his face. Said eye lingers on Iruka's lips for a tad too long. Flustered, Iruka stares at Naruto and Sakura. His two former students are practically yelling at each other about what the wedding colors should be. While Naruto is insistent on orange and purple, Sakura insists that pink and white would clash with each other a lot less. "Did they argue like this when they were still yours?"
Kakashi's phrasing makes Iruka pause and ponder about it. It's only been six years since they graduated from the academy. In that time, they've gone through invasions, attacks from Orochimaru and the Akatsuki, an entire war... And now it's peaceful. Iruka almost doesn't know what to do with himself now aside from wake up, train, teach, visit Naruto, go home, sleep, and repeat the cycle all over again with nothing but the occasional day at the mission desk to break up the monotony. He can't even imagine the change that Kakashi has had to go through, working through his trauma and stepping up to the role of Hokage in such a short time. It's a wonder he has so much freedom and still acts as casually with everyone as he does considering his position.
"Of course they did. I'd argue it's gotten a lot better... Back then, Sakura would've beat the crap out of him," Iruka answers.
"I suppose you have a point," Kakashi shrugs and sips on the water in front of him. Iruka assumes that will be the extent of their conversation until Kakashi pipes up again just seconds later. "So, are you excited for the wedding?"
"Of course," Iruka answers, not just because he's sat at the table with one of the people getting married at said wedding, but also because he is genuinely excited. Hinata has been in love with Naruto since they were young children, and they've both been through a lot. For them to have finally found each other after so many years is a good thing. Iruka is happy for them. He knows that the wedding will be a beautiful event, too. How could he not be excited? The only qualm he has is that he's almost thirty and still embarrassingly single, so he has no one to go with. "I'm happy for them. I think it'll be good for all the kids to gather at one event and see each other, too. They deserve to be able to do that after the war they've just gone through... The only times they really got to be together after graduating were during village emergencies... Or funerals."
